We purchased the 2016 Tacoma. We had running boards added as part of the purchase. The storage compartments are of good size. The phone sync and navigation systems were easy to set up. The manual was easy to follow. It is a nice ride.

Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Generally — the 4.33/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.67/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, resale value, and long-lasting performance. The Tacoma also fits buyers who want a capable midsize truck with rugged versatility, and the overview highlights its off-road ability plus a more comfortable, better-equipped cabin. With 30.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback emphasizes reliability, long-lasting performance, and resale value, while also suggesting the truck is dependable enough to remain a favorite among midsize-truck shoppers. The expert evaluation also describes the Tacoma’s capability, reliability, and predictability as central to its reputation. On the cost side, the Tacoma is described as unlikely to bring unusual problems or unexpected major repairs, and its maintenance profile is helped by a revised frame and composite bed.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is buying a truck with hidden wear from hard use, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
At 59.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used off road or for towing. Pay close attention to frame condition, suspension wear, tire wear, and signs of hard use in the cabin and bed. Because this model is often bought for capability, the difference between a clean, lightly used truck and a heavily worked one can be significant.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup starts with the hard-working SR and continues to the well-equipped SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and the range-topping Limited. SRs and SR5s feature fabric-trimmed seats, while the Limited gets premium leather. Some high points include Qi wireless charging, climate control, touchscreen audio, push-button start, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts.
- Powertrain: The Tacoma offers a carried-over 2.7-liter 4-cylinder and a new 3.5-liter V6. The V6 makes 278 hp and uses an Atkinson-cycle efficiency strategy with VVT-iW and D-4S direct and port fuel injection. Either engine can be paired with a new 6-speed automatic transmission.
- Safety package: The Toyota Star Safety System™ includes vehicle stability control, traction control, an antilock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. The airbag system includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests for the front seats. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts are also mentioned.
- Infotainment: SR5s feature Entune Audio Plus with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and the Scout GPS Link navigation app. TRD Tacomas get Entune Premium Audio with navigation, an App Suite, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The truck also includes standard Bluetooth hands-free integration, audio streaming, Siri® Eyes Free, touchscreen controls, and voice recognition.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4-cylinder returns 19 mpg city/23 highway/21 combined with RWD. The V6 returns 19/24 with RWD and 18/23 with 4WD. In TRD 4WD Off-Road form, it is rated at 18 mpg city/23 highway.
Which 2016 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 5 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR is the most stripped-down choice, with fabric-trimmed seats and standard Entune audio, so you give up some of the nicer comfort and tech features found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SR5 is the best value for many shoppers because it adds Entune Audio Plus, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, and the Scout GPS Link navigation app over the base truck.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most upscale choice, with premium leather and the Entune Premium JBL Audio system as standard equipment.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Off-Road is the one to choose if you want the most trail-focused setup, but its specialized suspension and hardware are more than many daily drivers need.
The TRD versions add unique upholstery, and the Limited is the trim that brings the most comfort-oriented upgrades.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,190 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.44% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,406.14, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $24,164 sits slightly below last year's $24,768.
That kind of softening can help you as a buyer now, but it also suggests the truck is still holding value relatively well. The Tacoma’s strong reputation, loyal following, and owner satisfaction should continue to support demand when it’s time to sell. If you buy a clean example with good history, you’re more likely to preserve value than if you start with a rough, heavily used truck.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma safe?
It earns Good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for most tests, though it received a Marginal score for roof strength.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Tacoma carries the Toyota Star Safety System™, which includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. The airbag system includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests for the front seats. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and a rear-view camera are also part of the safety story.
The roof-strength caveat is worth keeping in mind, especially because pickups are naturally more rollover-prone than sedans.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.44% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 brings an all-new redesign, a stronger V6, and more refined tech and cabin quality.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $20,824, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $24,164 average.
- It emphasizes rugged off-road capability and dependable durability.
The bottom line: If you want the newer redesign, stronger powertrain, and better cabin refinement, the 2016 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front and you can live with older tech, the 2015 is the value play.
