CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 2,227 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,206.00, 29.1% of 2016 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota Tacoma 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
60.4% of 2016 Tacoma models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a redesigned midsize pickup that was built to defend a long-running lead in a crowded segment. It can be configured 29 different ways, and buyers can choose between two cab styles: the extended Access Cab or the 4-door Double Cab. Each is available with rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive, giving the Tacoma a broad range of setups for drivers who want a truck that is easier to live with than a full-size pickup.
What has long made the Tacoma appealing is its reputation. It has been a go-to choice for off-roaders, outdoor enthusiasts, and professionals who need capability without the bulk of a larger truck. Toyota’s own description emphasizes the Tacoma’s capability, reliability, and predictability, and those traits have helped it build one of the most solid pickup reputations out there. Owner feedback reinforces that image, with praise for reliability, resale value, and long-lasting performance, though some shoppers may still have concerns about pricing, minor issues, and interior storage.

Sleek styling. 4x4, long bed, 6 cylinder. It has “go” power. 4 doors makes it comfortable for passengers.

Toyota are great mid-size trucks that last forever however, I'm only 6ft and I had a hard time fitting in the truck.

We purchased the 2016 Tacoma. We had running boards added as part of the purchase. The storage compartments are of good size. The phone sync and navigation systems were easy to set up. The manual was easy to follow. It is a nice ride.

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback emphasizes reliability, resale value, and long-lasting performance, which matches the Tacoma’s reputation for being dependable and predictable. The expert evaluation also reinforces that theme by describing the truck as durable and noting that it should not present unusual problems or unexpected major repairs for its class.
Toyota’s cost-effectiveness notes also point to peace of mind, including a revised frame and a composite bed that addresses a common rust area. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior wear, maintenance history, and any past corrosion issues have been checked carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
At 60.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used off road or for towing. Focus on body condition, frame condition, and signs of hard use, since those are the areas most likely to affect long-term ownership costs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from the hard-working SR to the well-equipped SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited. Base SR models are the most stripped down, while higher trims add more comfort, convenience, and refinement.
- Powertrain: You can choose a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder or a 3.5-liter V6, and both can be paired with a new 6-speed automatic. The V6 is the stronger and more efficient choice, while the 4-cylinder is the simpler setup.
- Safety package: The Toyota Star Safety System™ includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. Available 4WD aids like Multi-terrain Select and Crawl Control add capability on the right trims.
- Infotainment: SR models get Entune audio, SR5 adds a 6.1-inch touchscreen with Scout GPS Link, TRD trims get Entune Premium Audio with a 7-inch touchscreen and navigation, and Limited gets the Entune Premium JBL Audio system. Bluetooth, Siri® Eyes Free, touchscreen controls, and voice recognition are standard, but there is no WiFi hotspot capability.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4-cylinder returns 19 mpg city/23 highway/21 combined with RWD, while the V6 is rated at 19/24 with RWD and 18/23 with 4WD. The V6 also posts 18 mpg city/23 highway in the TRD 4WD Off-Road setup.
Which 2016 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 5 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the most basic choice, with fabric-trimmed seats and standard Entune audio. It makes sense if you want the Tacoma’s core capability at the lowest entry point.
- SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Entune Audio Plus, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, and the Scout GPS Link navigation app while staying below the more specialized trims.
- TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more upgraded feel and the stronger infotainment setup from the TRD side of the lineup, without going all the way to the off-road-focused model.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the trim for buyers who want the Tacoma’s off-road hardware, including extra skidplates, Bilstein suspension dampers, and a suspension tuned for rough terrain.
- Limited: This is the most upscale version, with premium leather and the Entune Premium JBL Audio system, so it suits you if comfort and premium features matter most.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, with the Toyota Star Safety System™ included on every trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
The market looks moderate and selective, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,273 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.95% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,315.54, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $24,191 sits slightly below last year's $24,674.
That small decline suggests the Tacoma remains in demand even as pricing has eased a bit. For you, that means depreciation pressure is relatively mild compared with many trucks, especially if you buy a well-kept example and hold it for several years.
Its strong owner satisfaction and reputation for durability help support buyer interest on the back end. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Tacoma’s safety equipment centers on the Toyota Star Safety System™, which includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. It also includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests for the front seats.
The safety writeup also notes that crash-test scores for this model year were not yet available, so you should lean more heavily on the standard safety hardware and the truck’s available driver aids. Available 4WD features like Multi-terrain Select and Crawl Control can also help you avoid getting stuck in difficult conditions.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.95% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 redesign brought a broader range of trims, cab styles, and powertrains, giving you more flexibility than the outgoing generation.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $20,584, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $24,191 average.
- It is a final-year truck with a clear off-road focus and a limited-production TRD Pro trim.
The bottom line: If you want the newer redesign, broader configuration choices, and stronger long-term market appeal, the 2016 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is spending less and you specifically want the older truck’s rugged, off-road-oriented character, the 2015 is the value play.
