CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 2,288 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,150, 30.3% of 2016 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota Tacoma 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
60.5% of 2016 Tacoma models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a redesigned midsize pickup that was built to keep its long-running lead in a segment with growing competition. It can be configured 29 different ways, and buyers can choose between two cab styles: the extended Access Cab or the 4-door Double Cab. Each is available with rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive, giving the Tacoma a broad range of setups for shoppers who want a truck that is easier to live with than a full-size pickup.
What has long made the Tacoma distinctive is its appeal to off-roaders, outdoor enthusiasts, and professionals who want capability without the bulk of a larger truck. Its reputation is built on capability, reliability, and predictability, and owners also commonly praise its reliability, resale value, and long-lasting performance. At the same time, some buyers have noted concerns about pricing, minor issues, and interior storage, so the Tacoma’s strengths are balanced by a few practical drawbacks.

Sleek styling. 4x4, long bed, 6 cylinder. It has “go” power. 4 doors makes it comfortable for passengers.

Toyota are great mid-size trucks that last forever however, I'm only 6ft and I had a hard time fitting in the truck.

We purchased the 2016 Tacoma. We had running boards added as part of the purchase. The storage compartments are of good size. The phone sync and navigation systems were easy to set up. The manual was easy to follow. It is a nice ride.

User feedback highlights reliability, resale value, and long-lasting performance, with owners often describing the truck as dependable and a good choice for the long haul. The expert evaluation also emphasizes capability, reliability, and predictability, which reinforces the Tacoma’s reputation as a truck you can count on.
The Tacoma’s durability story is strong, but used buyers should still watch for wear, prior repairs, and maintenance history because long-term ownership risk depends heavily on how each truck was treated.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
At 60.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used off road or for towing. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of body, suspension, or interior wear so you can separate a clean, well-kept truck from one that has been worked hard.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup starts with the hard-working SR and continues to the well-equipped SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and the range-topping Limited. SR and SR5 models use fabric-trimmed seats, while the TRD versions add unique upholstery and the Limited gets premium leather. The SR5 adds a 6.1-inch touchscreen, Scout GPS Link navigation app, and more, while the TRD trims step up to Entune Premium Audio with a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and an App Suite. The TRD Off-Road also adds extra skidplates, Bilstein suspension dampers, and an off-road-tuned suspension.
- Powertrain: You get a carried-over 2.7-liter 4-cylinder with 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque, or a new 3.5-liter V6 with 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. The V6 uses Atkinson-cycle efficiency technology and can be paired with a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual, while the 4-cylinder can also be paired with a manual or automatic.
- Safety package: The Tacoma carries the Toyota Star Safety System™, which includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. It also includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts are available, but not every trim gets the same equipment.
- Infotainment: SR models get Entune audio, SR5 models add Entune Audio Plus with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and Scout GPS Link, and TRD Tacomas get Entune Premium Audio with navigation, an App Suite, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The system includes Bluetooth hands-free integration, audio streaming, Siri® Eyes Free, touchscreen controls, and voice recognition, but there is no WiFi hotspot capability.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4-cylinder returns 19 mpg city/23 highway/21 combined with RWD, while the V6 returns 19/24 with RWD and 18/23 with 4WD. The V6 test truck was rated at 18 mpg city/23 highway.
Which 2016 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 5 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point, so it makes the most sense if you want the Tacoma’s core capability and plan to keep costs down. It gets fabric-trimmed seats and standard Entune audio, but it leaves out the richer infotainment and comfort upgrades found higher up the range.
- SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a 6.1-inch touchscreen, Scout GPS Link, and Entune Audio Plus while staying below the TRD models. If you want a more usable daily driver without paying for off-road hardware, this is the trim to target.
- TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more upscale-feeling Tacoma with the TRD-specific interior and Entune Premium Audio, including navigation and a 7-inch touchscreen. It suits you if you want more equipment than the SR5 but do not need the TRD Off-Road’s extra hardware.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the trim to buy if you want the Tacoma’s off-road character to be the priority. It adds skidplates, Bilstein dampers, and an off-road-tuned suspension, making it the clear choice for trail use and rough terrain.
- Limited: Pick this if you want the most comfort-focused Tacoma, with premium leather and the top-end Entune Premium JBL Audio system. It is the right fit if you care more about refinement than rugged extras.
The safety package is broad, but blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts are not universal, so check equipment carefully by trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without waiting for a dramatic discount.
- Deal availability: 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,319 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.87% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,316, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $24,148 sits slightly below last year's $24,608.
That modest decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, the Tacoma’s strong reputation still matters because trucks with loyal followings tend to stay in demand even when prices soften. If you buy well and keep the truck in good condition, you should still have a strong path to resale later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma does not yet have crash-test ratings available from the major agencies.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Tacoma includes the Toyota Star Safety System™, with vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. It also comes with driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests for the front seats. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts are available, but equipment varies by trim.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.87% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 brings a redesigned body, a stronger V6, and a broader tech upgrade.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $20,769, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $24,148 average.
- It is a final-year truck with a clear off-road focus and a simpler, more rugged identity.
The bottom line: If you want the more modern Tacoma with better tech, stronger powertrain options, and broader everyday appeal, the 2016 is the better pick. If your priority is spending less and you value a simpler, more purpose-built truck, the 2015 is the cheaper path worth considering.
