Summary
With 252 currently listed for sale near Boston, MA and an average price of $23,734.00, 23.0% of 2016 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota Tacoma 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a redesigned midsize pickup that was built to defend a long-running lead in a crowded segment. It can be configured 29 different ways, and buyers can choose between two cab styles: the extended Access Cab or the 4-door Double Cab. Each is available with rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive, giving the Tacoma a broad range of setups for drivers who want a truck that is easier to live with than a full-size pickup.
What has long made the Tacoma appealing is its reputation. It has been a go-to choice for off-roaders, outdoor enthusiasts, and professionals who need capability without the bulk of a larger truck. Toyota’s own description emphasizes the Tacoma’s capability, reliability, and predictability, and those traits have helped it build one of the most solid pickup reputations out there. Owner feedback reinforces that image, with praise for reliability, resale value, and long-lasting performance, though some shoppers may still have concerns about pricing, minor issues, and interior storage.

Sleek styling. 4x4, long bed, 6 cylinder. It has “go” power. 4 doors makes it comfortable for passengers.

Toyota are great mid-size trucks that last forever however, I'm only 6ft and I had a hard time fitting in the truck.

We purchased the 2016 Tacoma. We had running boards added as part of the purchase. The storage compartments are of good size. The phone sync and navigation systems were easy to set up. The manual was easy to follow. It is a nice ride.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright failure and more about how hard the truck was used, especially if it saw frequent off-road or 4WD duty.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used off-road or in 4WD. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of hard use, since the Tacoma’s appeal often depends on how well it was cared for. Pay close attention to the body, frame, suspension, and interior wear so you can separate a clean truck from one that has been worked hard.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR starts with fabric-trimmed seats and standard 4-way front seats, while the SR5 adds Entune Audio Plus with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and Scout GPS Link. The TRD trims add unique upholstery, and the Limited brings premium leather, plus more premium features such as Qi wireless charging, climate control, touchscreen audio, push-button start, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts.
- Powertrain: You get a carried-over 2.7-liter 4-cylinder or a new 3.5-liter V6. The V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, uses Atkinson-cycle efficiency tech, and can be paired with a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual.
- Safety package: The Toyota Star Safety System™ includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. The truck also includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests.
- Infotainment: Standard tech includes Bluetooth hands-free integration, audio streaming, Siri® Eyes Free, touchscreen controls, and voice recognition. Higher trims add a 6.1-inch touchscreen or a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, App Suite functionality, and available premium audio.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4-cylinder returns 19 mpg city/23 highway/21 combined with RWD, while the V6 returns 19/24 with RWD and 18/23 with 4WD. In testing, the V6 4WD TRD Off-Road returned 18 mpg city/23 highway.
Which 2016 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 5 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR is the most stripped-down choice, with fabric-trimmed seats and standard Entune audio, so you miss out on the richer infotainment and comfort upgrades found higher up.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SR5 is the best value pick because it adds Entune Audio Plus, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, and Scout GPS Link without jumping all the way to the pricier TRD or Limited models.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most upscale version, with premium leather, Entune Premium JBL Audio, and the most polished cabin presentation in the lineup.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Off-Road is the one to choose if you want the Tacoma’s strongest trail hardware, but its specialized setup makes it less necessary for typical daily driving.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, and the available blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts is a useful upgrade to look for.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,185 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.13% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,343.89, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $24,255 sits slightly below last year's $24,782.
That modest decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now without giving up the Tacoma’s long-term value appeal. The model’s strong reputation for durability and loyal demand should continue to support resale strength over time. If you buy well and keep the truck in good condition, you should be in a solid position when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma safe?
It earns Good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for most tests, though it received a Marginal score for roof strength.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Tacoma includes the Toyota Star Safety System™, with vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. It also includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests for the front seats. Available 4WD features like Multi-terrain Select and Crawl Control add confidence when you’re off pavement.
The roof-strength result is the main caveat to keep in mind, especially if you’re comparing this truck with vehicles that have stronger crash-test performance in that area.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.13% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 brings a new 3.5-liter V6 with 278 horsepower, plus improved refinement and off-road capability.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $20,483, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $24,255 average.
- It emphasizes rugged off-road capability in TRD Pro form.
The bottom line: if you want the newer redesign, stronger V6, and broader trim and tech choices, the 2016 is the better target. If your priority is spending less and you’re comfortable with an older truck that leans harder into off-road character, the 2015 is the value-oriented alternative.
