CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota Sienna
overall

Summary
With 76 currently listed for sale near San Jose, CA and an average price of $16,988, 30.3% of 2016 Toyota Siennas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota Sienna 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
94.7% of 2016 Sienna models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Sienna stands out as a family-focused minivan that pairs practicality with a strong technology story. Its most distinctive update is Siri Eyes Free, which brings voice activation to the Sienna for iPhone users and adds another layer of utility and safety. That fits a vehicle already described as having an impressive suite of tech, and it helps explain why the Sienna has long been a leader in the minivan segment.
Beyond the tech angle, the Sienna’s appeal comes from its reputation for giving buyers a lot for their money in a highly competitive class. It has also been a top-selling U.S. minivan off and on for more than 15 years, which reinforces its broad family appeal. Owner feedback lines up with that image, with praise for comfort, spaciousness, and the variety of features, along with appreciation for the value and luxury feel of the limited edition models.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. Some drivers note that engine noise can be noticeable during acceleration, and getting in and out of the car seats may be challenging for some. Even so, the 2016 Toyota Sienna remains distinctive for buyers who want a roomy, well-equipped minivan with a useful voice-control upgrade.

The features are great especially the right blind spot display. This car is a great value. The only thing missing is leather seats. I can’t compare it to any other models since this one is a special edition.

Reviewed a 2016 Toyota Sienna on Oct 14, 2020
We looked at the Honda and Toyota minivans. We ended up purchasing the Sienna. It is a great vehicle, great value, very comfortable. Prior to purchasing the vehicle the two negative reviews I found were the engine is loud when accelerating and the car seats are hard to get in and out. I did not even notice the engine noise so that is a non-issue for me but the car seats were a little tricky. We leave our car seats in for extended periods of time (only take out to clean) so its really not a big deal. If we took them out every day I could see how this would be annoying but the fact that they essentially live in the car I really dont care. All the extra features are really nice too, automatic doors with buttons on the key fob, build in sun screens, electronics are really nice and responsive, the interior space and head room is massive. We really enjoy this vehicle and will have it for a long time.

| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,774 |

Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Toyota Sienna earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
You’re looking at a family-focused minivan that stands out for comfort, spaciousness, and a strong feature set. Owners also consistently praise the value and the luxury feel of the limited edition models, especially the sound system and interior design. That lines up with the Sienna’s use case as a roomy, well-equipped people mover with a useful tech story.
Only 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the best examples may take some searching.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe the Sienna as reliable and dependable, with praise for its trouble-free ownership feel and long-term appeal. The expert evaluation also points to a strong reputation for reliability and notes that it has historically been a class leader in that area. On the cost side, the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition and maintenance history matter more than the model’s reputation alone, especially as mileage climbs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?
At 52.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple trims or higher-mileage examples. Focus on signs of wear in the cabin, sliding-door operation, and any evidence that the vehicle has been used heavily as a family hauler. If you’re shopping a higher-priced example, make sure the equipment level matches the asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base L trim includes automatic headlights, windshield-wiper heaters, tri-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera in a 6.1-inch touchscreen, and Siri Eyes Free. The LE adds heated side mirrors, power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, an upgraded stereo, a 7-inch touchscreen, privacy glass, and upgraded interior materials.
- Powertrain: Every Sienna uses a 3.5-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission. FWD versions are rated at 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, while AWD versions drop to 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.
- Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. Some features are tied to packages or specific trims, and the Advanced Technology package is offered for FWD Siennas.
- Infotainment: Base models use a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while higher trims move to a 7.0-inch screen and enhanced connectivity. The rear entertainment system with Driver Easy Speak is a standout feature, and some versions add navigation and smartphone integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The Sienna returns 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for FWD models, or 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway with AWD.
Which 2016 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, SE, SE Premium, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the value-oriented starting point, and it already brings a surprisingly long list of features, including Siri Eyes Free, a rear-view camera, tri-zone climate control, and 17-inch alloys. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price without giving up the core family-friendly equipment.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, a larger touchscreen, upgraded audio, and better interior materials. If you want a more complete daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
- SE: This trim adds the sport suspension, tighter steering, 19-inch wheels, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power liftgate. It suits you if you want a firmer ride and more upscale equipment.
- SE Premium: This version layers on blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a rear-seat entertainment system, HDMI and SD inputs, dual 120-volt power supplies, enhanced smartphone integration, and navigation. It’s the pick if you want the SE’s chassis tuning plus more family tech.
- XLE: This trim trades away the sportier setup for a more comfort-focused feel, while adding fake wood trim, a power passenger seat, power rear quarter windows, and keyless entry and ignition. It’s a good fit if you want a more traditional upscale minivan setup.
- Limited: This is the most luxurious version, with premium leather, a heated steering wheel, navigation, a JBL audio system, parking sensors, auto power-folding mirrors, and available rear entertainment on the Premium sub-trim. It’s the right choice if you want the most features and don’t mind paying for them.
The safety package is strongest on trims and packages that include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,275 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,191, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $17,616 sits slightly below last year's $17,774.
That small decline suggests the market has stayed relatively stable rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern can be helpful because it points to predictable demand and less risk of a sudden value drop. Well-kept examples should remain easier to position competitively than vehicles with unclear history or heavy wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna safe?
The 2016 Toyota Sienna earns top overall scores from both NHTSA and IIHS, though NHTSA gave it a second-highest rating in total frontal crash and IIHS did the same in the small overlap frontal-crash test.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The available driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. Those features are not uniformly standard across every trim, so you should confirm the exact equipment on any listing you’re considering. The safety story is strong overall, but the second-highest ratings in those specific crash tests are worth noting if you’re comparing it with newer alternatives.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The year’s standout update is Siri Eyes Free, which adds useful voice control and a bit of safety for iPhone users.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $15,567, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,616 average.
- It brought major upgrades and improved in almost every respect.
The bottom line: If you want the newer year with stable pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and a useful tech upgrade, the 2016 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the smarter value play, especially if you find a clean, well-maintained example.
