Summary
With 274 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,535, 32.8% of 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrids for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid stands out by pairing a hybrid drivetrain with a crossover SUV body, giving it an unusual mix of efficiency and utility. Toyota presents it as a hybrid SUV that can be capable and efficient at the same time, and the result is a compact SUV that aims to do more than the typical hybrid formula.
What makes it especially distinctive is how Toyota positions it in the market. The RAV4 Hybrid is described as competing with mainstream compact SUVs such as the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V, while Toyota also says it can be more efficient, more capable, and more versatile. That combination gives it broad appeal for buyers who want hybrid fuel savings without giving up the practicality expected from a crossover.

Reviewed a 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid on Oct 4, 2022
I was between this car and the 2020 Kia niro. I’ve only been driving the RAV4 hybrid for a few days but I’m so in love. It drives so smoothly and is incredibly quiet. The space inside is more comfortable than the niro with better acceleration and power in general. I’m currently averaging about 36MPG. It’s awesome.

How much does the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid cost?

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,781 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,803 |
| Year-Round High | $19,328 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,755 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +5.78% |
Prices are up 5.78% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 283 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
The overview and expert evaluation both point to a hybrid SUV that blends efficiency with crossover utility, and Toyota positions it as a practical alternative to mainstream compact SUVs. That makes it a strong fit if you want hybrid fuel savings without giving up everyday usefulness.
The market also shows 31.8% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The expert evaluation describes the RAV4 Hybrid as a capable and efficient hybrid SUV, and its powertrain is presented as a strong match for buyers who want both performance and fuel economy. The cost-effectiveness commentary also emphasizes that the hybrid version delivers better performance and fuel economy for only a small price premium over comparable non-hybrid models.
Toyota’s hybrid setup is framed as a practical, well-rounded solution rather than a compromise, which supports confidence in day-to-day ownership. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the vehicle’s condition and maintenance history match its mileage and age.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
At 61.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and trim match the seller’s description.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin is described as a strong blend of form and function, and the Limited adds a more upscale two-tone interior with extensive leatherette and soft-touch materials. The XLE is the more practical choice if you want the smaller wheels and larger tires that better absorb bumps.
- Powertrain: The hybrid setup uses a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder with three electric motors for 194 net horsepower and electronic all-wheel drive. It is described as more powerful than the non-hybrid RAV4 and more efficient, with 34 mpg city, 31 highway, 33 combined.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. A rear-view camera is included, and the bird’s-eye-view camera with proximity sensors is available.
- Infotainment: Both XLE and Limited trims feature Toyota’s 6.1-inch touchscreen navigation system, along with Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and app access. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 34 mpg city, 31 highway, 33 combined, and the expert drive notes fuel economy around 33 and 34 mpg in combined city and highway driving.

- XLE: This is the better-value choice if you want the core hybrid experience without paying for the top trim. It gets the same 6.1-inch touchscreen navigation system and the same hybrid powertrain, while the smaller wheels and larger tires should ride more comfortably over rough pavement.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the more upscale cabin treatment, including the two-tone interior and more extensive use of leatherette and soft-touch materials. It is the more premium-feeling version, but the added comfort and appearance upgrades are the main reasons to step up.
Toyota Safety Sense P is part of the safety package, and the available bird’s-eye-view camera with proximity sensors is a useful add-on if parking assistance matters to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to reward patience.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 283 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.78% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 61.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,803, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $18,781 sits slightly above last year's $17,755.
That upward move suggests the market still sees value in this hybrid SUV’s mix of efficiency and utility. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be able to benefit from that steady demand later.
Because the model is positioned as both capable and efficient, it has a broad appeal that can help support future buyer interest. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The RAV4 Hybrid also comes with the full complement of front and side impact airbags, plus a rear-view camera, while the bird’s-eye-view camera with proximity sensors is available.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.78% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert take highlights a hybrid SUV that combines 194 net horsepower with 34 mpg city, 31 highway, 33 combined, making it a compelling blend of capability and efficiency.
The bottom line: If you want the 2016’s hybrid efficiency, crossover practicality, and strong expert approval, it’s a solid year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on listings near the low end of the range and prioritize condition, because the market still rewards clean examples and well-kept hybrids.
