How much does the 2016 Toyota Prius cost?

Prices are up 1.25% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.

There are 677 listings available, which gives you a modest pool to compare before you buy.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

The 2016 Prius is presented as the standard bearer for the hybrid segment, and it leans into that role with familiar strengths plus a few updates for its fourth generation. It is aimed at you if you want a fuel-saving daily driver with a strong reputation, solid ergonomics, and impressive cargo space. The expert score also reflects balanced strengths across look and feel, technology, and safety.

The market shows 35.7% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2016 Prius is described as a proven hybrid nameplate that has already built icon status, and the expert review emphasizes its staying power in the hybrid market. Its 1.8-liter gas engine paired with two electric motor-generators is a straightforward hybrid setup, and the car is framed as a dependable choice for buyers who want a fuel-saving commuter with a strong reputation. The cost-effectiveness commentary also points to pricing that is low enough to attract new buyers while keeping existing fans interested.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the hybrid system and overall condition have been maintained well, since that matters more than the badge alone.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Prius?

At 52.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on any car with prior damage or incomplete service records. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of repair quality, then make sure the hybrid system and braking feel are consistent on a test drive. Because this model’s appeal depends heavily on efficiency and daily usability, you want to confirm that the car still feels tight, quiet, and well sorted.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base cabin uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while higher trims move to a 7-inch screen and add navigation, app suite features, and HD predictive traffic and Doppler weather overlay. The base setup also lacks the higher-end safety technology found on the Four.
• Powertrain: The Prius uses a 1.8-liter gas engine with two electric motor-generators for a net 121 horsepower. The Base model uses a nickel-metal-hydride battery, while every other trim gets a more compact lithium-ion pack.
• Safety package: Every Prius comes with Toyota’s Star Safety System, plus advanced front- and side-impact airbags. The Prius Four adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control, while the Four and Four Touring also add a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The Prius Two and Two Eco come with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, six speakers, USB 2.0 input, aux audio jack, reversing camera, Bluetooth voice activation, and Siri Eyes Free integration. Higher trims get a 7-inch touchscreen, a 3-month XM trial, the Entune app suite, navigation, and traffic and weather overlays.
• Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is estimated at 54 mpg city/50 highway/52 combined, and the Prius Two Eco improves that to 58/53/56.

Which 2016 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Prius is offered in 6 trim levels: Two, Two Eco, Three, Three Touring, Four, Four Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Two: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Prius basics with the 6.1-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, Bluetooth voice activation, and the core hybrid setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model.
• Two Eco: This is the best-value trim if your priority is efficiency, since it adds the stronger fuel-economy tuning while keeping the same core tech and convenience features as the Two.
• Three: This is the smart step up if you want the 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, the Entune app suite, and the added connected features without jumping all the way to the upper trims.
• Three Touring: Choose this if you want the Three’s tech content and a more upscale trim position, but the source does not spell out a unique equipment advantage beyond the trim lineup itself.
• Four: This is the trim to target if safety tech matters most, because it adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control.
• Four Touring: Pick this if you want the Four’s safety equipment plus the top-end trim position in the lineup.

The safety package is strongest on the Four and Four Touring, while the lower trims keep the standard Star Safety System.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Prius?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 677 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.25% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 52.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,193, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Prius's resale value?

The current average of $15,213 sits slightly above last year's $15,025.

That modest increase suggests the market has held up well, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. A price trend like this usually means buyers still see value in the model’s efficiency and reputation, so you may not face steep depreciation if you keep the car in good condition. Strong maintenance records and clean history should help you preserve that value.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius safe?

The 2016 Toyota Prius earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Prius comes with Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop Technology. It also includes advanced front- and side-impact airbags as part of the standard safety suite.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.25% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The fourth-generation redesign brings updated styling, improved tech, and strong fuel economy.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,517, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $15,213 average.
• It combines utility, comfort, and fuel economy in a way few cars can match.

The bottom line: If you want the newer fourth-generation Prius with updated tech and a still-reasonable market price, the 2016 is the better primary choice. If your main goal is to spend less up front, the 2015 is the better value path, especially if you find one with a clean history and strong maintenance records.
