What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Avalon?

At 54.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you get too far into the process, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any car that looks promising. Focus on bodywork quality, signs of prior repair, tire condition, and whether the car drives straight and feels consistent under braking and acceleration.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base XLE Plus includes dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, heated mirrors, auto headlights, keyless entry and ignition, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, while the XLE Premium adds navigation, a 9-speaker stereo, driver memory settings, wireless smartphone charging, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring. The Limited adds tri-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power rear sunshade, auto-dimming mirrors, automatic wipers, xenon headlights, ambient lighting, and an 11-speaker JBL system.
• Powertrain: The Avalon Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter gasoline engine paired with an electric motor and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack for a combined 200 hp. The setup is tuned for efficiency and smooth response, with strong low-end torque from the electric motor.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense adds a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, auto high-beam adjust, and dynamic radar cruise control. It is optional rather than standard on the example described.
• Infotainment: The upgraded Entune system uses a 7-inch touchscreen with smartphone-app integration. The Premium Entune setup adds navigation and wireless smartphone charging, while the Limited gets the most complete audio and convenience package.
• Fuel efficiency: The Avalon Hybrid is rated at 40 mpg city and 39 highway, and the test notes also mention a nearly 700-mile range thanks to a 17-gallon fuel tank.

Which 2016 Toyota Avalon trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Avalon is offered in 3 trim levels: XLE Plus, XLE Premium, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XLE Plus: This is the value-oriented choice if you want the Avalon’s core comfort and convenience features without paying for extras you may not need. It already gives you a strong standard equipment list, so it makes sense if you want the Avalon experience at the lowest entry point.
• XLE Premium: This is the best-value trim if you want the biggest jump in everyday usefulness. You get navigation, a better stereo, driver memory settings, wireless charging, and key safety upgrades like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
• Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the most luxury and comfort features. It adds tri-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power rear sunshade, xenon headlights, ambient lighting, and the JBL audio system.

Toyota Safety Sense is optional on the example described, so check whether a used listing includes it.

What is the 2016 Toyota Avalon's resale value?

The current average of $16,846 sits slightly above last year's $16,395.

That upward move suggests the Avalon has held buyer interest well enough to support pricing. For a future seller, that can be a positive sign because a model with steady demand is usually easier to move without steep discounting.

The car’s strong owner satisfaction also helps support resale appeal. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Avalon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.75% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 brings a fresh face, a refreshed Entune system, and a new base trim, while the expert notes say things are back to normal after the previous generation’s stiffer-suspension experiment.

The bottom line: If you want a comfortable, well-liked Avalon with strong owner satisfaction and a refreshed look, the 2016 is a solid choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the broader market for the best-condition example, but prioritize history and equipment over chasing the absolute lowest sticker.
