Is the 2016 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.94/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Cost effectiveness.

Owners consistently praise its reliability, power, comfortable ride, spacious interior, towing capability, strong resale value, and long-lasting performance. That lines up well with the 4Runner’s use case as a true off-road SUV for you if capability matters more than fuel economy or a plush ride. With 33.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.94/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback repeatedly calls out reliability, long-lasting performance, and a vehicle you can count on, while the expert evaluation also emphasizes the 4Runner’s durable, purpose-built character. The performance writeup reinforces that this is a truck-like SUV designed to handle rough terrain rather than chase comfort-first compromises. The cost-effectiveness section also points to strong resale value, which usually goes hand in hand with dependable ownership appeal.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the 4Runner’s core durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not abused off-road.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota 4Runner?

At 57.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, underbody condition, and signs of off-road wear. Because this model is often bought for capability, it’s smart to focus on how the truck has been used rather than just how it looks in photos. Pay close attention to maintenance records, tire wear, suspension condition, and any evidence of hard trail use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail Premium trim adds useful off-road-oriented equipment such as a sliding rear cargo deck and the kinetic dynamic suspension system, while the base setup is more stripped back in comparison.
• Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 delivers 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque, and the truck is tuned for obstacle work more than quick acceleration. It also carries a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.
• Safety package: Stability and traction control, 4-wheel ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, plus side knee and full-length curtain airbags are part of the safety story.
• Infotainment: The upgraded Entune system adds cell-phone navigation, and the backup camera is a useful aid. The screen is described as small enough that a bigger one would help.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4Runner returns 17 mpg city/21 highway for a combined 18 mpg.

Which 2016 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 1 trim level: Trail Premium.

Here's the short version:

The Trail Premium is the one to focus on if you want the 4Runner’s off-road hardware and a more complete feature set. It adds the kind of equipment that fits the truck’s mission, including the sliding rear cargo deck and KDSS, and it suits you best if you plan to use the SUV for rougher terrain or want the most capability-focused version of this model year.

The safety content does not call out a trim-level safety gap, but it does note the 4Runner’s overall crash-test limitations.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota 4Runner?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right example.

• Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,243 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.41% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,358, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $23,932 sits slightly below last year's $24,523.

That modest decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means the 4Runner is still holding value reasonably well, but you should not expect a rising-price environment to do the work for you. Strong condition, clean history, and desirable equipment will matter more when it’s time to resell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.94/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2016 Toyota 4Runner earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with three-star rollover ratings, four-star frontal ratings, and five-star side ratings.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety package includes stability and traction control, 4-wheel ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, plus side knee and full-length curtain airbags. The crash-test results are the main caveat here, especially the rollover score, so if safety is a top priority for you, that’s worth weighing carefully.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.41% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.94/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 adds cell-phone navigation and increased towing capacity, which make it more useful without changing its core off-road identity.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $21,686, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $23,932 average.
• It is a rugged SUV aimed squarely at serious off-road ability.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market mix of price, inventory, and feature updates, the 2016 is the better default choice. If your budget is tighter and you mainly care about rugged capability, the 2015 is the value-oriented alternative worth a look.
