The expert evaluation also emphasizes that this is a rugged SUV built for capability and durability rather than soft-road comfort, which supports the idea that it is engineered for dependable use over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota 4Runner?

At 57.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of the body, undercarriage, and suspension. Because this model is often used for tougher driving, condition matters more than mileage alone. Pay close attention to signs of off-road wear, uneven tire wear, and any evidence of poor repairs.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail Premium example highlights the 4Runner’s off-road-focused equipment, including skid plates and useful off-road tech, while the cabin is described as straightforward rather than especially upscale. That makes lower trims more basic in feel, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want more convenience features.
• Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 hp and is tuned for capability rather than quick acceleration. It also supports towing up to 5,000 pounds, and the 4Runner’s off-road hardware includes crawl-speed control, a locking rear differential, and variable terrain modes.
• Safety package: Stability and traction control, 4-wheel ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist are part of the safety setup, along with side knee and full-length curtain airbags. The safety writeup also notes that the 4Runner’s crash performance is not class-leading.
• Infotainment: The upgraded Entune system adds cell-phone navigation, and the backup camera is a useful aid. The source also notes that a bigger screen would help, so you should check whether the interface feels modern enough for your needs.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4Runner returns 17 mpg city/21 highway and 18 combined, which is a meaningful tradeoff if you drive a lot.

Which 2016 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 1 trim level: Trail Premium.

Here's the short version:

The Trail Premium is the one to focus on if you want the 4Runner’s most clearly off-road-oriented setup, including crawl-speed control, a locking rear differential, variable terrain modes, and KDSS. It also adds the kind of equipment that makes the truck easier to live with on rough terrain, while still keeping the 4Runner’s core rugged character intact.

The safety content notes that the 4Runner’s crash performance is not especially strong, so you should weigh its capability against that limitation.

For a future seller, the current trend implies less immediate upside than before, but the 4Runner still benefits from strong demand among buyers who want a rugged SUV with a loyal following.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.19% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 keeps the 4Runner’s off-road focus while adding cell-phone navigation and a higher towing capacity.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $21,491, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $23,887 average.
• It is a rugged SUV built for serious off-road ability and strong utility.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-year shopping case, the 2016 is the better pick because it combines a softer price trend with strong owner satisfaction and the 4Runner’s core capability. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly alternative.

How does the 2016 Toyota 4Runner compare to the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The 4Runner is the better fit if you want a rugged, off-road-focused SUV with strong owner satisfaction and better resale appeal.
