CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Subaru Crosstrek
overall

Summary
With 1,272 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,614, 32.4% of 2016 Subaru Crosstreks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
57.5% of 2016 Crosstrek models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek stands out for adding useful technology and safety equipment while simplifying its name. For 2016, it gains the Starlink telematics suite and safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert, and it also drops the “XV” from the front of its name. Subaru also gives it a front-end restyle and some interior tweaks, which help keep the compact crossover feeling current.
Even with those updates, the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek is still held back by its powertrain. That makes it a good fit for buyers who value the Crosstrek’s practical, safety-focused character more than outright performance. Owner feedback also points to strong satisfaction with the vehicle’s safety, reliability, all-wheel drive, and easy handling, reinforcing its appeal as a versatile everyday crossover.

Purchased a Limited version that has many options for a 2016 model year. Crosstrks retain their value and are very reliable. Felt the car was a good value despite other cars being available for less. Newer models have more safety features, but they were out of our price range.

| Year-Round High | $13,802 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,786 |

Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 8/10.
Owners consistently praise the safety features, reliability, all-wheel drive, and easy handling. That lines up with the Crosstrek’s practical, safety-focused character, especially if you want a versatile everyday crossover rather than a performance-first vehicle. The market also shows 33.5% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to reliability, dependable ownership, and trouble-free everyday use, with many shoppers also valuing the Crosstrek’s long-term appeal. The expert notes also emphasize its practical, durable character and all-wheel-drive confidence, even though the powertrain is the main weak spot. If you’re buying used, the biggest long-term ownership risk is making sure the drivetrain and overall condition are solid, since that’s where this model’s compromises show up most clearly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?
At 57.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this model’s appeal depends heavily on its safety-focused, practical character, condition matters as much as equipment. Pay close attention to how the powertrain feels on a test drive, since that’s the area most likely to affect your day-to-day satisfaction.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.0i is well equipped with 17-inch alloys, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera, fog lights, a 6.2-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, and a USB port/Aux input. The 2.0i Premium adds heated, body-color mirrors, heated front seats, an upgraded stereo, contrast stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an adjustable center armrest, and a cargo cover and tray. The 2.0i Limited adds upgraded gauges and infotainment with a 7-inch touchscreen and satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and an acoustic windshield.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter boxer engine is paired with a 5-speed manual on the 2.0i and 2.0i Premium, while the CVT is optional on the Premium and standard on the Limited. The manual uses a typical symmetrical all-wheel-drive system with 50/50 power distribution, while CVT-equipped trims use a front-wheel-drive-biased system that can send more power rearward when needed.
- Safety package: The Eyesight safety system adds rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. It is available on higher trims, and the tech notes indicate it can be disabled when the camera view is blocked by sun, fog, mist, dirt, snow, or mud.
- Infotainment: The base trim uses a 6.2-inch touchscreen, while the Limited upgrades to a 7-inch system. Starlink adds automatic collision notification with SOS, stolen-vehicle recovery, and a monitoring app.
- Fuel efficiency: The manual transmission is rated at 23 mpg city/31 highway, and the CVT adds 3 mpg on either end of the spectrum.
Which 2016 Subaru Crosstrek trim should I buy?
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek is offered in 3 trim levels: 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, 2.0i Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.0i: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want a well-equipped crossover with a rear-view camera, smartphone integration, and the core Crosstrek formula. It makes the most sense if you’re focused on affordability and can live without the extra comfort and convenience features.
- 2.0i Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds heated front seats, heated mirrors, an upgraded stereo, and nicer interior touches without jumping too far in price. If you want the sweet spot between cost and comfort, this is the one to target.
- 2.0i Limited: This trim is the right pick if you want the most upscale cabin and the most tech-rich setup, including the 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and an acoustic windshield. It’s the best choice if you want the most complete Crosstrek experience and don’t mind paying more for it.
The safety package is strongest on higher trims, where Eyesight adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to make comparison shopping worthwhile.
- Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,262 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,582, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?
The current average of $12,641 sits slightly below last year's $13,786.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now if you plan to keep the vehicle for a while. For a future seller, the softer current pricing means there may be less upside than before, but the model’s broad appeal still supports demand. Strong owner satisfaction can help stabilize resale interest over time, especially for shoppers who value safety and all-wheel drive.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek safe?
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek earns top marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, with a four-star overall rating from NHTSA and top ratings in all IIHS tests.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Crosstrek comes with the Eyesight safety system, which adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. Standard safety equipment also includes 4-wheel antilock brakes, traction and stability control, a rear-view camera, front side airbags, curtain-side airbags, a driver knee airbag, and active front head restraints. One caveat is that the Eyesight system can be disabled when the camera view is blocked by weather or debris, so you should not rely on it as a substitute for attentive driving.
Should I buy a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 stands out for adding Starlink and more safety tech while also getting a front-end restyle and interior tweaks.
The bottom line: If you want the Crosstrek with the most up-to-date safety and convenience equipment for this generation, the 2016 is the one to focus on. If you’re mainly shopping on price, you can still find attractive listings, but you should be selective about condition and history because the market includes a meaningful share of accident-related listings.
