CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Subaru Crosstrek
overall

Summary
With 1,237 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,704.00, 33.6% of 2016 Subaru Crosstreks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
56.4% of 2016 Crosstrek models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek stands out for adding useful technology and safety equipment while simplifying its name. For 2016, it gained the Starlink telematics suite along with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert. It also dropped the “XV” from the front of its name, giving the compact crossover a cleaner identity.
Subaru also gave the 2016 Crosstrek a front-end restyle and some interior tweaks to keep it feeling current. Those updates help make it more appealing to buyers who want a practical, easy-to-live-with crossover with a strong safety focus. At the same time, its powertrain remains the main limitation, and that is what holds it back most.

Purchased a Limited version that has many options for a 2016 model year. Crosstrks retain their value and are very reliable. Felt the car was a good value despite other cars being available for less. Newer models have more safety features, but they were out of our price range.

See more price trendsHow much does the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,751 |

| Year-Round High | $13,826.88 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,810 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.67% |
Prices have softened 7.67% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,242 listings available, which suggests you have a decent amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $12,691.93, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 8/10.
Owners consistently praise the safety features, the reliability, and the all-wheel-drive system. They also describe it as versatile and easy to handle, which fits a compact crossover that is meant to be practical and easy to live with.
The 2016 updates add useful tech and safety equipment, including Starlink, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert. That makes it a strong fit if you want a small crossover with a safety-first focus and everyday usability.
33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners also describe it as reliable and appreciate its dependable, trouble-free character. The expert notes reinforce that impression by emphasizing the Crosstrek’s straightforward all-wheel-drive setup and durable-feeling mechanical layout.
The powertrain is the main ownership concern, especially because it is loud and can feel strained at highway speeds. For used buyers, that means you should pay close attention to transmission behavior, service history, and whether the car has been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?
At 56% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on how the powertrain feels in real driving, since the engine and transmission are the model’s biggest weakness. You should also check that the safety and tech features work properly, because this model year added several important systems.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.0i includes 17-inch alloys, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera, fog lights, a 6.2-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, and a USB port/Aux input. The 2.0i Premium adds heated body-color mirrors, heated front seats, an upgraded stereo, contrast stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an adjustable center armrest, and a cargo cover and tray. The 2.0i Limited adds a 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and an acoustic windshield.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter boxer engine makes 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. A 5-speed manual is standard on the 2.0i and 2.0i Premium, while the CVT is optional on the Premium and standard on the Limited. The CVT improves efficiency but can feel sluggish at highway speeds and adds noise.
- Safety package: The Eyesight safety system adds rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. The base trim includes a rear-view camera, but the system’s camera resolution is low, and Eyesight can shut off when the view is blocked.
- Infotainment: The base trim uses a 6.2-inch touchscreen, while the Limited upgrades to a 7-inch system with satellite radio. Starlink adds automatic collision notification with SOS, stolen-vehicle recovery, and a monitoring app.
- Fuel efficiency: Manual-transmission models are rated at 23 mpg city/31 highway, and the CVT adds 3 mpg on either end of that range.
Which 2016 Subaru Crosstrek trim should I buy?
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek is offered in 3 trim levels: 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, 2.0i Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The 2.0i gives you the essentials, but it misses the upgraded stereo, heated front seats, leather-wrapped touchpoints, and the richer interior details found higher up.
- Sweet-spot trim: The 2.0i Premium is the best value if you want the biggest jump in comfort, because it adds heated mirrors, heated front seats, and a better stereo without moving all the way to the top trim.
- Premium/top trim: The 2.0i Limited is the most fully equipped choice, with the 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and an acoustic windshield.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that Eyesight adds useful driver-assistance features, but it can be unavailable when the camera view is blocked.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,242 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.67% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,691.93, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?
The current average of $12,751 sits slightly below last year's $13,810.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. The model’s value retention is still supported by Subaru’s generally strong reputation for holding value over time.
For you, that means resale should be more stable if you choose a clean, well-kept example with the right service history. Cars with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek safe?
Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Crosstrek top marks in all tests, with only the NHTSA’s total frontal impact test receiving anything other than a perfect score, rating four-star.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Crosstrek comes with 4-wheel antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a full suite of airbags including front side, curtain-side, and a driver knee airbag. It also includes a rear-view camera and active front head restraints.
The Eyesight system adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning, but it can shut off when the camera view is blocked by sun, fog, dirt, snow, or mud. That means the safety hardware is strong, but you should still verify that all driver-assistance features function properly during a test drive.
Should I buy a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.67% compared with last year.
