Is the 2016 Nissan Murano a good car?

Generally — the 2016 Nissan Murano earns a 4/5 user rating and a 6.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

The Murano’s appeal is rooted in its bold styling and distinctive headlight design, and it is positioned as a crossover that straddles mainstream and luxury territory. At the same time, the overview and road-test notes make clear that style is the main draw, while the rest of the vehicle feels less modern than its appearance suggests.

You should think of it as a strong fit if you want a visually distinctive crossover with a comfortable, upscale cabin and a style-first personality. 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Nissan Murano reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Murano’s 3.5-liter V6 is described as refined, efficient, strong, and dependable over time, and the ownership commentary emphasizes outstanding reliability. The road-test notes also point to a powertrain that revs freely and sounds good doing it, which supports the impression of a durable, well-sorted mechanical package.

If you buy used, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright mechanical weakness and more about finding one that has been maintained well enough to preserve the Murano’s smooth, dependable character.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Nissan Murano?

At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has incomplete service records or signs of prior bodywork. Focus on overall condition, because the Murano’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has aged inside and out.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Murano is offered in S, SV, SL, and Platinum trims, and the base model is the one most likely to leave you wanting more equipment. Higher trims add upscale touches and convenience features that better match the Murano’s style-first personality.
• Powertrain: Every 2016 Murano uses a 260-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 with a CVT. The engine is described as refined, efficient, and dependable, but the transmission can hunt between ratios on grades.
• Safety package: The Murano can be optioned with a long list of modern technologies, including Predictive Forward Collision Warning, automatic emergency braking, Driver Attention Alert, and blind-spot monitoring. Lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and pedestrian-detection capability are missing.
• Infotainment: The system offers a responsive touchscreen, modern graphics, Bluetooth streaming, voice recognition, and hands-free text messaging. The larger 8-inch screen comes with navigation, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available.
• Fuel efficiency: The road test notes 21.1 mpg in combined driving, while the broader model-year context points to 21/28 mpg city/highway and 24 mpg combined.

Which 2016 Nissan Murano trim should I buy?

The 2016 Nissan Murano is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, but it is the trim most likely to feel sparse if you want the Murano’s more upscale personality to come through. It makes sense only if you are shopping strictly on price.
• SV: This is the best-value choice for most buyers because it gives you a better balance of equipment and price without pushing you into the highest trims. If you want the smartest all-around buy, start here.
• SL: This trim is the better pick if you want a more premium-feeling Murano with more comfort and convenience content. It suits you if you care more about daily livability than minimizing purchase price.
• Platinum: This is the most fully equipped version and the one to choose if you want the Murano’s upscale side at its strongest. It is the right fit if you want the most features and the most polished presentation.

The safety package can be optioned with a long list of modern technologies, but lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and pedestrian-detection capability are not included.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Nissan Murano?

The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,166 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.48% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,533, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Nissan Murano's resale value?

The current average of $11,533 sits slightly below last year's $12,201.

That softer pricing suggests the Murano has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. The current market also shows that buyers are still willing to consider this model year, especially when the listing is clean and well equipped.

If you keep mileage reasonable and maintenance records organized, you should be in a better position to protect value when it is time to sell. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Should I buy a 2016 Nissan Murano or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.48% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 model year is defined by its bold redesign and style-first personality, with expert commentary emphasizing that the Murano’s appeal is strongest when you value design and comfort over modernity.

The bottom line: The 2016 Murano makes sense if you want a distinctive crossover with strong styling, a comfortable cabin, and a market price that has already come down. If you are more price-sensitive, you can still shop this year confidently, but you should be especially selective about condition and history because the best examples will stand out quickly.

How does the 2016 Nissan Murano compare to the 2016 Honda Pilot?

Our experts score the 2016 Nissan Murano 6.8/10 and the 2016 Honda Pilot 7.3/10.

The Murano is the better pick if you care more about style, fuel economy, and a lower used price. The Pilot brings more horsepower, a higher expert score, and a larger used-market footprint, so it may suit you better if you want a more traditional family SUV with broader appeal.
