CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander
overall

Summary
With 193 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,223, 24.9% of 2016 Mitsubishi Outlanders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 5.5 / 10.
62.2% of 2016 Outlander models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander stands out because Mitsubishi made more than 100 changes to it for the year, and those updates clearly improved the vehicle. Even so, it still comes across as a quiet presence in a segment filled with strong alternatives.
Its biggest appeal is that it is better than before, but it does not fully shake its plain reputation. The driving character is also a limitation: it can feel like a big, white marshmallow on a mountain road, which suggests a soft, rolling demeanor rather than a sharp one.

This car has great handling and great acceleration. All the Tech you need plus a decent 3rd row for an amazingly low price. I dont know how this vehicle doesnt get better ratings from car review sites. The V6 AWC is a very capable and substantial option that other manufacturers dont offer except with thousands of dollars more.

This is the basic no frills model of the outlander but my husband is a mechanic with over 40 years experience with different model cars foreign and domestic and Mitsubishi is the best value for the price.

How much does the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,216 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,210 |
| Year-Round High | $10,240 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,240 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.00% |
Prices have softened 10.00% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 193 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander a good car?
Yes — 4.75/5 from users, and 5.5/10 from expert testing. The model scores 7/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Mitsubishi made more than 100 changes for this model year, and the updates improved the vehicle even if it still comes across as a quiet presence in a crowded segment. The Outlander’s appeal is strongest if you want a practical crossover that feels better than before, but not especially exciting to drive.
28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The expert review points to a sketchy reliability history and notes that the Outlander’s value retention is only average. The 4-cylinder powertrain is described as adequate for most situations, and the revised CVT helps make the available power usable in everyday driving.
If you buy used, the main long-term risk is that a lower-priced example may also bring higher ownership uncertainty, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander?
At 62.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim level you think you’re buying.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The revised lineup includes the ES, the SE, the new SEL, and the GT. The cabin changes and available features matter most as you move up the range, and the base setup is the one most likely to feel sparse compared with the better-equipped versions.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder makes 166 horsepower and is paired with a CVT that helps keep the engine usable in daily driving. The GT is the only version with a V6, and that engine is the better choice if you want stronger performance or need to tow up to 3,500 pounds.
- Safety package: The lane-departure warning system is bundled with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking, and that quartet is optional only on the SEL and GT versions.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth with music streaming, and a wide-angle reversing camera. A larger 7-inch screen, navigation, USB, SD card reader, and real-time traffic, weather, and gas-price data appear on the test vehicle.
- Fuel efficiency: The test loop returned 23.7 mpg in combined driving, which the review says is unimpressive.
Which 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander trim should I buy?
The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander is offered in 4 trim levels: ES, SE, SEL, GT.
Here's the short version:
- ES: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Outlander, but you should expect the fewest features.
- SE: This is the trim to target if you want a better balance of equipment and value without jumping all the way to the top of the range.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim if you want the most meaningful upgrades, including the available safety and convenience equipment that make the Outlander feel more complete.
- GT: Choose this one if you want the V6 engine and the strongest capability in the lineup, especially if towing matters to you.
The safety package with lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking is optional only on the SEL and GT.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 193 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.00% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,210, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander's resale value?
The current average of $9,216 sits slightly below last year's $10,240.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can be good news if you are buying now but less encouraging if you plan to sell soon. A softer price trend usually means future resale gains may be limited unless the vehicle is especially clean, well maintained, and well equipped.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander safe?
The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA when equipped with S-AWC, and a four-star overall rating when equipped with FWD. It earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS in the prior model year reference, with Good ratings in every crash-test evaluation.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The available driver-assistance bundle includes lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking, and it is optional only on the SEL and GT versions. The review also notes that blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are missing and would be welcome additions.
Should I buy a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.00% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mitsubishi made more than 100 changes for this model year, and the updates clearly improved the vehicle.
The bottom line: If you want the better-updated version of this Outlander and you can verify condition carefully, the 2016 is the stronger pick. If your priority is simply finding the lowest possible price, you can also compare nearby years, but the 2016 gives you a useful mix of improved equipment and softer pricing.
