CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Summary
With 967 currently listed for sale and an average price of $29,324, 31.2% of 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 3.92 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a luxury sedan that was built to showcase Mercedes-Benz’s best technology and craftsmanship. In the W222 generation, it brought a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, along with a cabin that made generous use of wood and metal accents. It also featured selectable ambient lighting, which became a defining Mercedes interior touch, and a pair of 12.3-inch screens under a single panel that still looked contemporary years later. Many of its best features were optional, but most versions were still well equipped, with available luxury touches such as rear executive seating packages, massaging seats, active parking assist, and Burmester surround-sound audio.
What makes the 2016 model especially appealing is how thoroughly it blends comfort, technology, and performance. The W222 introduced “magic body control,” which used road scanning to help the suspension react to imperfections in advance, and it also came with a surround-view camera system that integrated radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centering. Buyers could choose from strong V8-powered versions, and the lineup also included the S 550e plug-in hybrid, which offered 14 miles of electric range. At the same time, the car was not without drawbacks: it is expensive to maintain, and the source notes that electrical issues remain a common concern, so ownership can be costly even when the car itself feels exceptionally polished.

I think this car is trash. They have not been taking good care of it. Missing all the passengers windows buttons. The driver seat seat is broken and the car is filthy inside.

The car had several cosmetic and mechanical issues. There were numerous dents and scratches all over it. It’s definitely been in more than one accident Nomatter what they say in the listing. Then to top it off the reverse camera doesn’t work. Horrible listing!! Beware

| Current Average Price | $29,297 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,871 |
| Year-Round High | $32,957 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $32,783 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.63% |

There are 964 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a strong choice if you want a luxury sedan that emphasizes comfort, technology, and performance, though you should weigh its ownership costs carefully. It does not have a user rating available here, but drivers consistently praise its luxurious feel, advanced amenities, great handling, value for money, and superior performance compared with competitors. The overview also points to a cabin built around wood and metal accents, selectable ambient lighting, and available features such as rear executive seating packages, massaging seats, active parking assist, and Burmester surround-sound audio, which makes it especially appealing if you want a flagship sedan for long-distance comfort and high-end features. 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is presented as a highly polished luxury sedan, but ownership can be costly because maintenance is expensive and electrical issues are a common concern. Drivers also mention maintenance costs and electronic components as challenges over time, even while praising the car’s luxury and performance. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is less about basic capability and more about whether the specific car has been well maintained and properly repaired.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 58.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on electronics, since the model’s advanced systems can be expensive to sort out if something is not working correctly. It also makes sense to focus on overall condition and maintenance records, because this is the kind of luxury sedan where deferred upkeep can quickly become costly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to compare listings and wait for the right example.
- Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 964 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.63% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,871, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $29,297 sits slightly below last year's $32,783.
That decline suggests the market has moved in your favor as a buyer, but it also means future resale may depend heavily on how well you preserve the car’s condition and service history. If you buy one now, a clean, well-documented example is more likely to hold value better than a neglected one. For a future seller, the biggest advantage will come from keeping maintenance current and avoiding any unresolved electrical or cosmetic issues.
Should I buy a 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.63% compared with last year.
The bottom line:
The 2016 is a good pick if you want the S-Class experience at a softer price point and you’re willing to be selective about condition and maintenance history. If you want the broadest set of choices and the best chance of finding a clean, well-priced example, this year makes sense. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep an eye on listings near the low end of the range and prioritize cars with strong records over the cheapest option.
