What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mazda CX-9?

At 67.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has been used as a family hauler. Pay close attention to cabin wear, third-row condition, and any signs that the vehicle has seen heavy daily use. If you’re comparing multiple listings, focus on maintenance records and overall condition rather than mileage alone.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sport comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, a body-color roof spoiler, dual exhaust, 3-zone automatic climate control, auxiliary audio jack, dual USB ports, Bluetooth hands-free calling with streaming audio capability, and Mazda Connect infotainment. The Touring adds heated side mirrors, a power rear liftgate, leather seating with heated front seats, push-button start, a larger 8-inch touch screen, second-row armrests with integrated USB charging ports, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The Grand Touring adds 20-inch wheels, adaptive high beams, rain-sensing wipers, navigation, a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo, a head-up display, and more advanced safety gear. The Signature adds unique interior and exterior touches, including Nappa leather and exclusive Rosewood trim.
• Powertrain: The CX-9 uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-4 with 227 hp on 87-octane fuel and 250 hp on 93-octane, plus 310 pound-feet of torque. Power goes through a 6-speed automatic, with front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Available driver assistance includes blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, backup sensors, and forward collision avoidance. Some of the more advanced features are not standard on the base trim.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect is standard, with a 7-inch touch screen on the base model and an 8-inch touch screen on other trims. Wireless smartphone integration is not mentioned, and the system uses a rotary controller once the vehicle is in motion.
• Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive model returns 22 mpg city, 28 highway, and 24 combined. The all-wheel-drive model returns 21 mpg city, 26 highway, and 23 combined.

Which 2016 Mazda CX-9 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Mazda CX-9 is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the value play if you want the CX-9’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. You still get Mazda Connect, Bluetooth, dual USB ports, and three-row practicality, but you give up some of the comfort and driver-assistance upgrades found higher up the range.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds leather seating, heated front seats, a power liftgate, a larger 8-inch screen, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. If you want the most useful upgrades without jumping too far in price, this is the trim to target.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want a more premium feel, with 20-inch wheels, navigation, a Bose audio system, a head-up display, and additional safety equipment. It suits you if you care about comfort and tech as much as value.
• Signature: This is the most upscale version, with Nappa leather and exclusive interior trim details. It makes sense if you want the most luxurious CX-9 experience and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package is strongest on the higher trims, while the base model leaves some of the more advanced driver-assistance features for later upgrades.

What is the 2016 Mazda CX-9's resale value?

The current average of $13,204 sits slightly below last year's $14,289.

That price movement suggests the CX-9 has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned to limit your loss when it’s time to sell. The model’s upscale image and strong owner satisfaction also help support demand.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It comes standard with front and side impact airbags, LATCH child seat anchoring, a backup camera, an engine immobilizer, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available driver-assistance features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, backup sensors, and forward collision avoidance.

You should also note that some of the more advanced safety features are not standard on the base trim, so it’s worth checking exactly which equipment a specific listing includes.

Should I buy a 2016 Mazda CX-9 or consider a different year?

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 67.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.60% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 CX-9 is positioned as a more-for-less, near-luxury three-row SUV with a quieter cabin and upscale feel.

The bottom line: If you want the CX-9’s upscale character at a softened price, the 2016 is the year to focus on. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the market for the best-condition example and use the current inventory to compare trims and history carefully.
