CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mazda CX-9
overall

Summary
With 248 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,384, 32.7% of 2016 Mazda CX-9s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mazda CX-9 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Mazda CX-9 stands out by delivering a more-for-less proposition in the full-size SUV class. It has three rows and keeps Mazda’s sporty “Zoom-Zoom” character, but it also adds an air of luxury that gives it a near-upmarket feel. Mazda’s large SUV is described as punching above its weight, and that impression is reinforced by the quieter, more upscale cabin created after the vehicle shed a bunch of weight and Mazda invested in quality and sound deadening.
That upscale character is a major part of the CX-9’s appeal, especially for buyers looking for value in a large SUV. The 2016 model is presented as offering that near-luxury feel at a price below those of other large SUVs, even if it may cost more than direct competition. Owners also praise its safety features, craftsmanship, smooth driving experience, and value for money, while some wish for a larger navigation screen and more space in the third row.

Im really enjoying this car with my family of 6. Its cozy a bit tight in the 3rd row but its coziness makes up for it. Drives very smooth although brakes arent as promising as other cars I have driven. Good sound system, bluetooth connects pretty fast to phone when you first set it up. So far this car is a 9/10 for me!

- Powertrain: The CX-9 uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-4 with 227 hp on 87-octane fuel and 250 hp on 93-octane, plus 310 pound-feet of torque. Power goes through a 6-speed automatic to the front wheels or available all-wheel drive, and all models include Sport mode and manual tap-shift functionality.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side impact airbags, LATCH child seat anchoring, a backup camera, an engine immobilizer, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available driver-assistance features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, backup sensors, and forward collision avoidance. Some of the more advanced safety gear is not standard on every trim.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect is standard across the lineup. The base model uses a 7-inch touch screen, while all other trims get an 8-inch touch screen. Bluetooth hands-free calling and streaming audio are standard, along with auxiliary input and two USB ports. The system also supports available navigation, and the rotary controller takes over once the vehicle is in motion.
- Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive model returns 22 mpg city, 28 highway, and 24 combined. The all-wheel-drive model returns 21 mpg city, 26 highway, and 23 combined.
Which 2016 Mazda CX-9 trim should I buy?
The 2016 Mazda CX-9 is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, but it still gives you Mazda Connect, Bluetooth streaming, dual USB ports, and 3-zone automatic climate control. It makes sense if you want the CX-9’s core upscale feel at the lowest price.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds leather seating, heated front seats, a power rear liftgate, a larger 8-inch screen, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. If you want the biggest jump in comfort and convenience without moving too far up the price ladder, this is the one to target.
- Grand Touring: This trim adds the more premium touches you’ll notice every day, including navigation, a Bose premium stereo, a head-up display, adaptive high beams, and rain-sensing wipers. It’s the right pick if you want a more fully loaded CX-9.
- Signature: This is the most upscale version, with Nappa leather, Rosewood interior trim, and unique styling details. Choose it if you want the most luxurious presentation and are willing to pay for it.
The safety equipment is spread across the lineup, but the more advanced driver-assistance features are not standard on every trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mazda CX-9?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 244 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.19% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,147, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mazda CX-9's resale value?
The current average of $13,364 sits slightly below last year's $14,557.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now. If you plan to sell later, the softer pricing trend means your future resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle is documented.
The CX-9’s strong owner satisfaction should help support demand when it’s time to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Mazda CX-9 safe?
The CX-9 earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, LATCH child seat anchoring, a backup camera, an engine immobilizer, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available driver-assistance features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, backup sensors, and forward collision avoidance.
You should also note that some of the more advanced safety features are trim-dependent, so you’ll want to confirm exactly what’s included on any used listing you’re considering. The lane keeping assist is described as sensitive, so it may not be ideal if you prefer a less intrusive system.
Should I buy a 2016 Mazda CX-9 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.19% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 model stands out for its near-luxury feel, quieter cabin, and more-for-less value proposition in the large SUV class.
The bottom line: If you want the CX-9’s upscale cabin, strong owner satisfaction, and current price softness, the 2016 is a compelling buy. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on the cleanest, best-documented listings and be ready to move quickly when you find one near the low end of the range.
