Is the 2016 Lexus ES a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Lexus ES earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, sleek design, and luxurious interior, and they also value the reliability and driving ease. Is the 2016 Lexus ES reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners describe it as reliable and appreciate the trouble-free, dependable feel that makes it easy to count on. The expert review also emphasizes Lexus’s reputation for bulletproof reliability and notes that the ES is built for cruising rather than hard use. Lexus also includes an opt-in service notification feature that can help you stay ahead of scheduled maintenance.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not neglected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Lexus ES?

At 48.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had any bodywork or airbag-related repairs. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and whether the cabin electronics and comfort features work as expected. Because this model is bought for refinement, small signs of wear can matter more than they would on a more basic sedan.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The ES comes in only one trim, with packages that add features such as optional wood trim, a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, a power rear sunshade, navigation, premium audio, and Lexus’s Safety Suite. The base setup is more modest, so package content matters a lot here.
• Powertrain: It uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 268 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic. The setup is tuned more for cruising than performance, and the car’s relaxed character is a core part of the experience.
• Safety package: Lexus’s Safety Suite adds lane-departure warnings and blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control is also listed among the available safe-driving features. Some of the most useful driver aids are tied to options rather than standard equipment.
• Infotainment: A 7-inch customizable display is standard, along with HD radio, Bluetooth streaming, and traffic information. Navigation adds the Enform suite, and the system can include concierge-style functions such as movie times, weather, and Internet radio.
• Fuel efficiency: The ES is rated at 21 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, with 24 mpg combined. In testing, it returned roughly 22 mpg in a 70/30 highway/city mix.

Which 2016 Lexus ES trim should I buy?

The 2016 Lexus ES is offered in 1 trim level: ES 350.

Here's the short version:

The ES 350: This is the only trim, so your decision comes down to which packages you want. If you value comfort, quietness, and a refined luxury feel over sporty driving, this is the right starting point. The ultra-luxury package is the standout upgrade if you want the most upscale version, while the navigation, premium audio, and Safety Suite options let you tailor the car to your priorities.

What is the 2016 Lexus ES's resale value?

The current average of $19,757 sits slightly above last year's $18,754.

That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. The combination of steady demand and a comfort-first reputation can help support pricing, especially for well-kept examples with clean history and strong equipment. If you buy carefully now, you may have a better chance of preserving value when it’s time to move on.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Lexus offers lane-departure warnings, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control, and the optional Pre-Collision System earned a Superior rating for front crash prevention. That said, some of the most useful safety tech is tied to options rather than standard equipment.

Should I buy a 2016 Lexus ES or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 48.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 5.34% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 adds a refreshed grille and bumpers while keeping the quiet, comfort-first character intact.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $16,464, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $19,757 average.
• It emphasizes refinement and comfort with a plush cabin and bulletproof reliability.

The bottom line: Choose the 2016 if you want the refreshed look and a well-rounded luxury sedan with strong owner satisfaction. If your priority is saving money, the 2015 is the better value play and still delivers the core Lexus comfort and reliability formula.

How does the 2016 Lexus ES compare to the 2016 Toyota Avalon?

Our experts score the 2016 Lexus ES 7.8/10 and the 2016 Toyota Avalon 7.5/10.

The Lexus ES is the more upscale choice, with a quieter cabin and a stronger luxury focus, while the Avalon offers similar mechanical basics at a lower average used price. Both use the same 3.5L V6 and return the same city and highway MPG figures, so your decision comes down more to refinement and brand feel than powertrain differences. The Avalon has more listings and a slightly higher accident-free share, but the ES has the edge in expert score and deal share.
