You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any car that looks promising. If you buy carefully and keep the car in good condition, you can improve your odds of holding value better than a neglected example.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2016 Kia Soul or consider a different year?

• At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.65% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,813, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,328 average.
• It offers strong value with personality and useful upgrades.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $8,820, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,328 average.
