The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Drivers consistently praise its reliability, performance, smooth ride, handling, and good fuel efficiency. The overview also points to a more upscale appearance and a refined interior, which makes it a strong fit if you want comfort and everyday practicality in a family crossover.
With 31.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Kia Sorento reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as reliable, and the broader feedback also emphasizes dependable performance, smooth operation, and a trouble-free ownership experience. The expert review reinforces that impression by highlighting the Sorento’s solid everyday behavior and composed road manners.
It also benefits from a 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, which adds peace of mind for used buyers.
For a used shopper, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about how well a specific example has been maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Kia Sorento?
At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lower asking price. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and evidence of prior bodywork so you can separate a clean, well-kept Sorento from one that has been repaired after damage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim is well equipped, but it lacks some of the higher-end touches found farther up the range, including features like fog lights, a rear camera with back-up warning, and the more upscale interior equipment offered on upper trims.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder with 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque on the base trim, while higher trims add a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque or a 3.3-liter V6 with 290 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque. The turbo is responsive, though it can show a little lag off the line.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes dual front advanced airbags, side airbags, side curtain airbags, a rollover sensor, ABS, stability control, traction control, and electronic brakeforce distribution. Higher trims add or offer a rear camera with back-up warning, surround-view monitor, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warnings, lane-departure warnings, and advanced smart cruise control.
- Infotainment: The Sorento offers an 8-inch display on upper trims, UVO eServices, voice-command navigation, Bluetooth wireless technology, Sirius traffic, and no additional subscription fees for UVO features. It also includes smartphone app integration and maintenance notifications.
- Fuel efficiency: The turbo all-wheel-drive setup is rated at 19 mpg city/25 highway/22 combined, and the review notes an average of 21.0 mpg in mixed driving.
Which 2016 Kia Sorento trim should I buy?
The 2016 Kia Sorento is offered in 8 trim levels: L, LX, LX V6, EX, EX V6, SX V6, Limited, and Limited V6.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The L is the value play, but it misses some of the convenience and safety upgrades found higher up, including the rear camera and more advanced driver-assistance features.
- Sweet-spot trim: The LX V6 is the most appealing middle ground if you want stronger power and the third row without jumping all the way to the top of the range.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited V6 gives you the most complete mix of power, technology, and available safety features, along with the third row and rear air conditioning.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims are really aimed at off-road use, and the review suggests this is better suited to pavement and light-duty versatility.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the most advanced driver-assistance features are reserved for higher trims.

What is the 2016 Kia Sorento's resale value?
The current average of $10,044 sits slightly below last year's $11,055.
That price movement suggests the Sorento has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you choose a clean, well-maintained example, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell.
Demand should also stay supported by the model’s strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal as a practical family crossover.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
