CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Kia Sedona
overall

Summary
With 307 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,721.00, 30.6% of 2016 Kia Sedonas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Kia Sedona 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Kia Sedona stands out by blending minivan practicality with SUV-inspired design cues. Kia’s own description suggests that, if it had optional all-wheel drive, regular doors instead of sliding side doors, and half an inch more ground clearance, it would look like a crossover SUV. That positioning gives the Sedona a more distinctive personality than a typical family hauler, while still keeping the utility that buyers expect from a minivan.
It also aims higher than many rivals in terms of refinement. Kia says the top-of-the-line SXL model brings materials and features associated with a luxury car, and the 2016 Sedona is paired with top-notch safety ratings. Together, those traits make it appealing to shoppers who want everyday usefulness, a more upscale feel, and strong safety credentials in one package.

The only thing this car is missing is full STOW & GO, Otherwise this van is SO much better than our 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan which we traded in on this Sedona. This has better brakes, seats, comfort features (power sliding doors etc.) Power drivers seat, Heated seats. This Van drives and handles more like a car, Tighter turning circle and more responsive driving, Which is good for people who CAN drive. This is a good buy.

How much does the 2016 Kia Sedona cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $8,751 |
| Year-Round Low | $8,723.04 |
| Year-Round High | $9,459.05 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $9,379 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.70% |
Prices have softened 6.70% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 325 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $8,723.04, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Kia Sedona a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Kia Sedona earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. It stands out by blending minivan practicality with SUV-inspired design cues, while the top-of-the-line SXL aims for a more luxury-car feel. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.
That combination makes sense if you want everyday usefulness with a more distinctive look and a higher-end cabin experience than many family haulers. The market also shows 30.8% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Kia Sedona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Sedona is described as a solid, practical minivan with quality and reliability that rate about average, and Kia’s own positioning emphasizes a vehicle built to handle family duty with a more upscale personality. Its 3.3-liter V6 and 6-speed automatic are presented as robust and refined, which supports confidence in everyday use.
Kia also notes that some parts of the country included a free maintenance program, which can help reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the vehicle was maintained properly and hasn’t accumulated hidden wear from family-hauling duty.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Kia Sedona?
At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the van has been used for heavy family or shuttle duty. Focus on body condition, interior wear, and evidence that safety and convenience features still work as intended. If a listing includes advanced equipment, make sure it operates correctly rather than assuming it does.

- Trim level: The Sedona’s styling leans SUV-like, with exposed sliding door tracks, big wheels, and simulated skid plates, while the cabin aims for a more upscale feel in higher trims. The base trim is the most stripped-down version, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want the more premium look and feel.
- Powertrain: The Sedona uses a 3.3-liter V6 with 276 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. It is described as strong, smooth, and capable of moving a loaded van without feeling strained.
- Safety package: UVO eServices includes teen-monitoring features such as speed, curfew, and boundary alerts. A blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert is available for the EX and standard on the SX and SXL, while the Technology Package adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.
- Infotainment: Kia’s Your Voice (UVO) eServices uses an 8-inch touchscreen and supports connected services through a smartphone and Bluetooth. It also includes a Jukebox music hard drive, USB ports, song-tagging capability, and Pandora Internet radio, with navigation and a premium audio system available on upper trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The Sedona averaged 22.1 mpg in mostly highway driving with a full load of passengers and 19.1 mpg in combined driving, matching the EPA’s 19-mpg combined estimate.
Which 2016 Kia Sedona trim should I buy?
The 2016 Kia Sedona is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LX, EX, SX, and SXL (SX Limited).
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Sedona’s core minivan utility and SUV-inspired styling at the lowest price. It is the trim to compare against if you’re trying to keep costs down.
- LX: This trim adds more everyday convenience, including access to Kia’s UVO eServices infotainment system. It is a sensible step up if you want a better-equipped family van without moving too far up the price ladder.
- EX: This is the trim to watch if you want a stronger mix of comfort and safety, since blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is available here. It looks like a good middle-ground choice for many shoppers.
- SX: This trim adds more premium equipment and makes blind-spot warning standard. It also opens the door to the Technology Package, which adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.
- SXL (SX Limited): This is the most upscale version, with luxury-car-style materials and features. It is the best fit if you want the most premium Sedona experience and are willing to pay for it.
The safety-package upgrades are most compelling on the SX and SXL, especially if you want the Technology Package’s added driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Kia Sedona?
The market looks moderate and selective, so you have room to shop, but the better listings may not last long.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 325 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.70% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,723.04, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Kia Sedona's resale value?
The current average of $8,751 sits slightly below last year's $9,379.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted downward from prior levels. If you plan to resell later, your best protection is buying a clean, well-kept example at a strong price today. A lower entry cost gives you more room to absorb normal depreciation over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Kia Sedona safe?
The Sedona gets five-star ratings in every federal government assessment, along with a four-star rollover resistance rating. In IIHS testing, it earns the top Good rating in all crash tests and a Basic rating for frontal crash prevention.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Sedona’s safety tech centers on UVO eServices with teen-monitoring features, plus available blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. The Technology Package adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights on SX and SXL models.
One caveat is that the frontal crash prevention result is only Basic, and the review also notes that the forward-collision warning system and automatic high-beam headlights did not perform especially well in testing.
Should I buy a 2016 Kia Sedona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 Kia Sedona blends SUV-inspired styling with minivan practicality, and the top SXL trim adds luxury-car-style materials and features.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a smart pick if you want a distinctive, well-equipped minivan with strong safety credentials and a softer used-market price. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on the better-value trims and shop carefully for a clean history and a strong deal.
