Is the 2016 Kia Sedona a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Kia Sedona earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.

The Sedona stands out by blending minivan practicality with SUV-inspired design cues, while also aiming for a more upscale feel than many rivals. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.

35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Kia Sedona reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Sedona is described as having top-notch safety ratings, and the expert review also says it rates about average in quality and reliability. Its 3.3-liter V6 is described as a terrific engine, and the transmission and chassis tuning are presented as refined and capable in everyday use.

The ownership picture is helped by the fact that Kia says some parts of the country include a free maintenance program, which can reduce early ownership costs. Even so, used buyers should still pay close attention to service history and overall condition, especially because long-term hard data for this generation is limited.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Kia Sedona?

At 54.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can verify body condition, repair quality, and how the vehicle has been maintained. Focus especially on signs of prior collision work, since the market includes a sizable number of non-clean examples.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sedona lineup includes L, LX, EX, SX, and SXL (SX Limited). The base L is the most stripped-down version, while the upper trims add more premium materials and features, with the SXL positioned as the luxury-leaning choice.
• Powertrain: The Sedona uses a 3.3-liter V6 with 276 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The review describes the engine as strong and the transmission as refined, with Drive Mode Select on SX and SXL models.
• Safety package: UVO eServices includes teen-monitoring features such as speed, curfew, and boundary alerts. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is available for the EX and standard on the SX and SXL, while the Technology Package adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.
• Infotainment: Kia’s UVO eServices system uses an 8-inch touchscreen and includes connected services, Bluetooth-based access, a Jukebox music hard drive, USB ports, and Pandora Internet radio. The SX and SXL can add an Infinity premium audio system, navigation, and a 360-degree surround-view monitor.
• Fuel efficiency: The review cites 19.1 mpg in combined driving and 22.1 mpg on a highway-heavy route, with an EPA estimate of 17 mpg city/22 highway/19 combined.

Which 2016 Kia Sedona trim should I buy?

The 2016 Kia Sedona is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LX, EX, SX, and SXL (SX Limited).

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense only if you want the lowest-cost way into the Sedona lineup and can live without the richer equipment found higher up.
• LX: This is the trim to target if you want a practical value play, since it adds more everyday usability while keeping the Sedona’s core family-hauling strengths intact.
• EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more comfort and convenience, and it can also be paired with blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert.
• SX: This trim brings a more upscale feel and adds Drive Mode Select, making it a good fit if you want more equipment and a more polished driving experience.
• SXL (SX Limited): This is the luxury-leaning choice, with the richest materials and features, and it’s the trim to choose if you want the most premium Sedona experience.

For safety, the Technology Package on SX and SXL adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.

• Inventory: There are 364 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.07% compared with last year.

What is the 2016 Kia Sedona's resale value?

The current average of $8,768 sits slightly below last year's $9,334.

That kind of price movement suggests the Sedona has softened in the used market, which can be good for you as a buyer but means future sellers may face some depreciation pressure. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can help protect your eventual trade-in or resale position.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The 2016 Kia Sedona gets five-star ratings in every federal government assessment, combined with a four-star rollover resistance rating. In tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, it gets the top rating of Good in all crash tests, combined with a Basic rating for frontal crash prevention.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is available for the EX and standard on the SX and SXL, while the Technology Package adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.

The review also flags shortcomings in the automatic high-beam headlights and says the forward-collision warning system proved inaccurate, so you should pay close attention to how the safety tech functions during a test drive.

Should I buy a 2016 Kia Sedona or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.07% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert review says the 2016 Kia Sedona blends SUV design cues with minivan utility and gives the top SXL model luxury-car materials and features.

The bottom line: The 2016 Sedona makes the most sense if you want a well-equipped family hauler with a lower used price and you’re willing to shop carefully for condition and history. If you’re especially price-sensitive, this year looks appealing; if you want a broader market and more listings to compare, you may also want to cross-shop nearby years before deciding.

How does the 2016 Kia Sedona compare to the 2016 Honda Odyssey?

Our experts score the 2016 Kia Sedona 7.7/10 and the 2016 Honda Odyssey 8.2/10.

The Sedona gives you a lower average used price and a stronger value proposition if you want more features for less money. The Odyssey counters with a higher expert score, stronger highway fuel economy, and a larger pool of listings, so it may appeal more if you want the more established all-around choice. If your priority is budget and premium-feeling equipment, the Sedona is compelling; if you want the stronger overall benchmark, the Odyssey has the edge.
