overall

Summary
With 5,762 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,634, 31.0% of 2016 Jeep Wranglers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Jeep Wrangler 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.17 / 10.
65.9% of 2016 Wrangler models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler stands out because it blends traits that are hard to find together in one vehicle. It has a convertible top for summer, 4-wheel drive for winter and off-road use year round, and some of the most unique styling and consistently rugged standard equipment available in any new car today. That combination gives it a clear identity: it is built to be fun, capable, and unmistakably Jeep.
At the same time, the Wrangler’s appeal comes with tradeoffs. The test-drive data notes its poor road manners, and owners commonly describe it as noisy and bumpy on the road. Even so, many owners praise the fun driving experience, the comfortable interior, and the simplicity that can help keep repair costs lower. Gas mileage is a frequent complaint, and some owners wished for a rearview camera, but those drawbacks have not stopped the Wrangler from remaining a popular choice.

The car states it has several benefits such as heated seats, rear camera, led lights, and a wench, however, none of these things work on the vehicle. This could be because if after market add ons, but as of no hardly anything works correctly. We will have to put a lot of money into it to get it working, therefore the price was not a good value.

So much fun to drive. More power and responsiveness than expected. Automatic start is awesome. Only wish it was equipped with a rear back up camera (installingonethisweek).

How much does the 2016 Jeep Wrangler cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,580 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,580 |
| Year-Round High | $19,191 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,191 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.39% |
Prices have softened 8.39% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,741 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable range of choices.
Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler a good car?
Yes — it earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 6.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the fun driving experience, the comfortable interior, and the impressive power, especially with the manual transmission. The Wrangler’s simplicity and lower repair costs also come up as recurring positives.
For you, that means this model makes the most sense if you want a vehicle with a clear identity: open-air fun, rugged capability, and a strong enthusiast following. It is less compelling if you prioritize quiet commuting or polished road manners.
30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners also describe it as simple and note lower repair costs, while the broader feedback points to a vehicle that many people feel good about living with over time. The expert evaluation reinforces that sense of durability by emphasizing its rugged standard equipment and purpose-built character.
If you buy used, the main long-term ownership risk is that the same traits that make it appealing can also mean more wear from hard use, so condition matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?
At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then focus your inspection on signs of prior damage, uneven wear, and how well the truck has been maintained. Because this model is often used for recreation, it is smart to pay close attention to the condition of the top, doors, underbody, and interior hardware.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport comes with manual windows and door locks, air conditioning, 16-inch steel wheels, and cloth seats, while the Sport S adds power locks and windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The Sahara adds brighter interior touches, automatic headlights, Sirius satellite radio, and 18-inch polished wheels, while the Rubicon adds BF Goodrich off-road tires and an electronically disconnecting front sway bar.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission and standard 4-wheel drive. Fuel economy is estimated at 16 mpg city, 21 highway, and 18 combined with the manual, while the automatic drops highway mileage to 20 mpg.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, and ultra-strong roll bars. The model lacks lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, and even a backup camera.
- Infotainment: The base setup includes the Radio 130 with a CD player, MP3 capability, and a front auxiliary audio jack. A 6.5-inch touchscreen adds GPS-based navigation plus Bluetooth, front-facing aux audio, and USB capabilities.
Which 2016 Jeep Wrangler trim should I buy?
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Wrangler experience with the least equipment. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and do not mind manual windows, manual locks, and the most basic cabin setup.
- Sport S: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds power windows and locks, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and 17-inch aluminum wheels without moving too far up the price ladder.
- Sahara: This trim is the better pick if you want a more polished feel, with bright interior accents, automatic headlights, Sirius satellite radio, and larger polished wheels.
- Rubicon: This is the trail-focused choice, with BF Goodrich off-road tires and an electronically disconnecting front sway bar for greater articulation off road.
The safety package is basic across the lineup, so you should not expect advanced driver-assistance features on any trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,741 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.39% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,580, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler's resale value?
The current average of $17,580 sits slightly below last year's $19,191.
That tells you the market has cooled, which can help you as a buyer now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If prices stay soft, future sellers may need to compete more aggressively on condition and equipment to stand out.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler safe?
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
It comes with multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, and ultra-strong roll bars. It also offers strong braking capabilities and trailer sway control.
The bigger issue is what it does not offer: lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, and a backup camera are all absent. That means you should be especially careful if safety tech is a priority for you.
Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Wrangler or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the classic Wrangler formula with open-air freedom, standard 4-wheel drive, and rugged off-road capability.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $16,550, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,580 average.
- It stays true to the Wrangler’s rugged identity while adding an upgraded sound system and fresh editions.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current-year pricing, inventory, and the classic Wrangler experience, the 2016 is the better starting point. If your main goal is to spend less, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly path, especially if you are willing to trade a bit of freshness for a lower entry price.
