How much does the 2016 Jeep Wrangler cost?

Prices have softened 7.95% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 5,817 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.6/5 user-rated SUV with an expert rating of 6.17/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its fun driving experience, comfortable interior, and impressive power, especially with the manual transmission. The Wrangler’s simplicity and lower repair costs also come up as recurring positives, which fits a vehicle built for buyers who value character and capability over refinement. Based on the overview, it makes the most sense if you want a convertible, 4-wheel-drive vehicle with rugged standard equipment and year-round go-anywhere appeal.

33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in the ways Wrangler buyers care about most: it’s simple, fun to live with, and associated with lower repair costs. The expert evaluation also emphasizes its rugged standard equipment and purpose-built character, which supports the idea that it’s built to be counted on for trail use and everyday ownership alike. The cost-effectiveness commentary adds that many buyers spend thousands customizing their Jeeps after purchase, so the factory setup can save you from immediate modification costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the same rugged, low-tech design that makes it appealing can also mean more compromises in comfort, noise, and fuel economy.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?

At 65.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body condition, underbody wear, and signs of prior off-road use. Because this model is often bought for capability and modified after purchase, it’s smart to focus on how the vehicle has been used rather than just how it looks in photos. Pay extra attention to any signs of damage, uneven wear, or missing equipment that could affect long-term ownership.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sport trim is the most basic, with manual windows and door locks, air conditioning, 16-inch steel wheels, and cloth seats. Sport S adds power locks and windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Sahara adds brighter interior touches, automatic headlights, Sirius satellite radio, and 18-inch polished wheels, while Rubicon is the trail-focused version with off-road tires and an electronically disconnecting front sway bar.
• Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic. Standard 4-wheel drive comes with Command-Trac, while Rubicon gets Rock-Trac with a 4:1 rock crawling ratio.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, and ultra-strong roll bars. The model lacks lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, and even a backup camera.
• Infotainment: The base setup is Radio 130 with a CD player, MP3 capability, and a front auxiliary audio jack. A 6.5-inch touchscreen adds GPS-based navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and front-facing aux audio and USB capabilities.
• Fuel efficiency: The Wrangler Unlimited is estimated at 16 mpg city, 21 highway, and 18 combined with the manual transmission, while the automatic returns 16 city, 20 highway, and 18 combined.

Which 2016 Jeep Wrangler trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Wrangler experience with the fewest extras. It’s the right pick if you want the lowest starting price and don’t mind manual windows, manual locks, and the most basic cabin equipment.
• Sport S: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like power windows and locks, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming mirror, and aluminum wheels without jumping all the way to the pricier trims.
• Sahara: Choose this if you want a more polished feel, with bright interior accents, automatic headlights, Sirius satellite radio, and larger polished wheels.
• Rubicon: This is the one to buy if trail capability matters most. It adds off-road tires and an electronically disconnecting front sway bar, making it the most serious off-road trim in the lineup.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the model still lacks several modern driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.

• Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 5,817 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.95% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 65.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,282, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler's resale value?

The current average of $17,282 sits slightly below last year's $18,775.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit upside if you’re planning to resell soon. If you purchase at a strong price and keep the vehicle in good condition, you’ll be better positioned to protect value later. The Wrangler’s broad appeal and steady demand help support resale strength, especially when the vehicle has been well cared for.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler safe?

It earns a three-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, and ultra-strong roll bars. The model also offers trailer sway control, which can help when towing in crosswinds. The big caveat is that it lacks several modern safety technologies, including lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, and a backup camera.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Wrangler or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 65.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.95% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for its convertible top, standard 4-wheel drive, and rugged equipment that make it a true year-round trail-ready icon.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $16,261, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,282 average.
• It stays true to its rugged identity while adding a few updates and fresh editions.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current pricing, broad inventory, and the 2016 model’s familiar Wrangler formula, this year is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less upfront and you’re comfortable giving up some of the 2016 market’s current advantages, the 2015 is the value-oriented alternative.
