How much does the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee cost?

Prices have softened 8.07% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 3,369 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, performance, and luxurious features, and many also like the spacious interior and powerful Hemi engine. That lines up with the Grand Cherokee’s broad appeal as an SUV that can handle everyday use while still fitting rugged adventures. If you want an SUV with strong styling, capability, and a premium feel, this model year fits that use case well.

The market also shows 31.8% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback highlights comfort, performance, and luxurious features, while also pointing to a spacious interior and powerful engine choices. The expert review also emphasizes that the Grand Cherokee is built for serious capability and can be counted on for towing and off-pavement use when properly equipped. Jeep’s cost-effectiveness notes also warn that reliability predictions are unimpressive, so used buyers should pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

At 58.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on bodywork quality, suspension condition, and signs of wear from towing or off-road use. It also makes sense to compare trim equipment carefully, since this model’s appeal often depends on how much capability and technology the specific vehicle includes.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Jeep sells this SUV in Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT model series. The lineup ranges from more basic versions to a more upscale Overland test vehicle with a 19-speaker sound system and an Advanced Technology package, while the SRT is described as track-ready and performance-focused.
• Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and Jeep also offers a 5.7-liter V8 for maximum towing capacity. The V6 is described as providing robust acceleration and up to 6,200 pounds of towing, while the V8 raises maximum towing to 7,400 pounds.
• Safety package: The optional Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. That package is pricey, so you should confirm it’s included if safety tech matters to you.
• Infotainment: Uconnect uses an 8.4-inch color touchscreen in the Overland model, with large graphics and easy-to-use virtual buttons. For 2016, it adds Siri Eyes Free and Do Not Disturb functions, though the system is described as aging and the Wi-Fi hotspot uses a slow 3G connection.
• Fuel efficiency: Jeep says official fuel economy estimates rise from 19 mpg combined to 21 mpg for 2016, and the test vehicle averaged 18.7 mpg during a week of testing.

Which 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT.

Here's the short version:

• Laredo: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Grand Cherokee’s core capability and styling without paying for extra equipment.
• Limited: This trim is a better fit if you want a more balanced mix of comfort and features while staying below the higher-end versions.
• Overland: This is the best-value choice if you want the upscale feel shown in the test vehicle, including the 8.4-inch touchscreen and available Advanced Technology package.
• Summit: Choose this if you want the more premium end of the lineup and are willing to pay for it.
• SRT: This is the performance-focused choice, and the review describes it as track-ready right from the showroom floor.

The safety package is optional on higher trims, so verify whether the vehicle you’re considering includes the Advanced Technology package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to find value.

• Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,369 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.07% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,211, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?

The current average of $13,211 sits slightly below last year's $14,371.

That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make this a tougher vehicle for future sellers to command a premium. If you buy now, you may benefit from the softer pricing, but you should also expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment. Well-kept examples with desirable features should hold up better than neglected ones, especially given the model’s broad appeal.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?

The 2016 Grand Cherokee does not meet the criteria for a Top Safety Pick nomination from IIHS because of a Marginal rating in the small overlap frontal impact test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The optional Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. That package is a meaningful safety upgrade, but it is not standard across the lineup. The expert review also notes that the automatic braking system intervened during testing, showing that the feature can be effective.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.07% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It balances towing, off-road ability, and styling with a broad trim range.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,685, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,211 average.
• It offers broad trim and engine choice with strong comfort and capability.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $14,343, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $13,211 average.
• It leans more into upscale comfort while keeping the Grand Cherokee’s rugged identity.

The bottom line: You should focus on the 2016 if you want the strongest mix of price softness, broad availability, and the Grand Cherokee’s signature capability. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2015 is the better value play; if you want a newer-feeling alternative and can spend more, the 2017 is worth a look.
