CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Hyundai Veloster

Summary
With 326 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,333, 26.4% of 2016 Hyundai Velosters for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Hyundai Veloster 4.71 / 5 stars.
51.2% of 2016 Veloster models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Hyundai Veloster stands out because it blends a sporty personality with an unusual three-door layout. In the first-generation Veloster section, Hyundai describes it as a hatchback with one door on the driver’s side and two doors on the passenger side, and it also notes that the car has generous cargo space. That combination gives the Veloster a practical side without losing its distinctive shape, which is part of what made it memorable in the first place.
For 2016, Hyundai gave the first-generation Veloster a refresh that included a revised hood and grille, while turbo models gained a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and upgraded interiors. The broader first-generation lineup also offered a 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine, and the source says the Veloster could be equipped with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Standard equipment was fairly generous for a car that originally cost less than $20,000, with items such as a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen, cruise control, power windows, and a six-speaker audio system. The available Tech Package added a rearview camera, navigation, keyless entry, and push-button start.
That said, the Veloster was not without compromises. The source notes that the original engine delivered 138 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque, which helps explain why some buyers wanted more performance, and owner feedback also points to a ride that can feel low to the ground and bumpy. Even so, the 2016 Hyundai Veloster remains appealing for shoppers who want a compact hatchback with a playful design, useful cargo room, and a more engaging character than many everyday commuters.

My only complaint is the color. I like the car and the options available and the color is growing on me. Nice ride, handling, and power combination.

I love everything about this car! It is sporty, compact and still roomy inside. The 3rd door is a great idea for it so rear passengers can get in and out without having to lift the seats in the front forward.

This was my most favorite car to drive EVER! I had the Turbo R Spec with a manual transmission. It made my commute the best part of my week and made me look for chances to take it on road trips. Unfortunately, I cant speak to long term dependability as it was totaled in a head-on collision at 5 months after purchase. But I CAN speak to safety! My crash was on the interstate and I walked away with my only injury being an airbag burn on my wrist. And while there was enough overall damage to be totaled, I was shocked at how well the front end held strong and protected the passenger compartment! It did have quite a bit of cabin noise at highway speeds, but I believe that was partially due to the bike rack on top. It was also a little bumpy of a ride, but that added to the fun and sense of adventure in driving. Despite both of these cons, I am hoping to replace it with another Veloster of the exact same model.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Veloster?
At 50.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with past damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on body panels, alignment, suspension feel, and signs of uneven wear. Because condition matters so much in a used Veloster, focus on how the car presents and drives rather than just the asking price.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Veloster?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 322 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.72% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 50.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,217.57, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Hyundai Veloster's resale value?
The current average of $8,415 sits slightly below last year's $9,219.
That tells you the market has moved down enough to create a more favorable entry point for buyers, but it also means future resale gains may be more gradual unless demand strengthens. If you buy well now, you can help protect your eventual exit price by choosing a clean, well-kept example with strong documentation and avoiding cars with visible wear or accident history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Veloster or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 50.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.72% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a smart pick if you want the Veloster’s distinctive styling, practical hatchback layout, and strong owner approval at a softer market price. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a cleaner or better-equipped example fits your budget more comfortably, but the 2016 remains the better all-around starting point for shoppers who value a balanced mix of price, personality, and satisfaction.
