Used 2016 Hyundai Sonata for Sale nearDurham, NC

How much does the 2016 Hyundai Sonata cost?

Prices have softened 5.21% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,420 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of used Sonatas to compare.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata a good car?

Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Cost effectiveness.

Owners consistently praise its features, comfort, and overall value, and they also appreciate the technology and the condition of the vehicle even after substantial mileage. That lines up with the Sonata’s practical midsize-sedan mission: it gives you a roomy, comfortable, well-equipped package that feels easy to live with. If you want a sensible family sedan rather than something flashy, this year’s Sonata fits that brief well.

The market also shows 28.1% good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Reviewers describe it as reliable, and they also highlight its comfort, value, and the way it holds up well even after substantial mileage. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by noting strong reliability and quality levels, along with low cost of ownership and an industry-leading warranty and roadside-assistance program. That combination points to a car you can count on for everyday use.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright dependability and more about finding a well-kept example with a clean maintenance history.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Sonata?

At 53.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because accident history is common enough to matter here, condition should carry extra weight in your decision. It’s also smart to confirm that the equipment you want is actually present, since feature content varies by trim.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE, Sport, and Limited trims give you different mixes of comfort and style, while the Limited 2.0T adds the most upscale equipment. The base setup is more straightforward, while higher trims bring a more refined cabin and more convenience features.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T use a 240-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. The turbo version delivers strong low-end torque and broad power, but the sport-tuned setup also brings a firmer ride.
• Safety package: Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are highlighted, and the Limited 2.0T adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, adaptive high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear parking-assist sensors. Those advanced features are a major reason to shop the higher trim.
• Infotainment: Android Auto smartphone integration is standard, and Blue Link subscription services are included across the lineup. The Limited 2.0T can add navigation, a premium sound system, and upgraded instrumentation.
• Fuel efficiency: The Sport 2.0T returned 25.5 mpg on the test loop, just shy of the 26 mpg combined estimate mentioned in testing.

Which 2016 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, Sport, Sport 2.0T, and Limited 2.0T.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the simplest path into the Sonata lineup, and it makes sense if you want the core midsize-sedan strengths without paying for extras. It gives you the basic value proposition, but it’s the least feature-rich choice.
• Sport: This trim is the best-value pick for many shoppers because it adds a more distinctive look and a stronger sense of style without jumping all the way to the turbocharged versions. It’s the trim to consider if you want a little more personality while staying reasonably priced.
• Sport 2.0T: Choose this if you want the turbocharged engine and stronger acceleration. It brings the more powerful powertrain and a sport-tuned chassis, but the firmer ride means it suits you best if you’re comfortable trading comfort for a more taut driving feel.
• Limited 2.0T: This is the trim to buy if you want the most complete Sonata experience. It adds the most advanced safety and convenience equipment, plus available navigation, premium audio, and upgraded instrumentation, making it the best choice if you want the most features and the strongest safety package.

The Limited 2.0T is the trim where the advanced driver-assistance features really come together, so it’s the one to target if safety tech matters most.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Sonata?

The market looks moderately favorable if you’re a selective buyer.

• Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,420 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.21% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,301, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

The current average of $9,303 sits slightly below last year's $9,815.

That softer pricing suggests the Sonata is a buyer-friendly used car right now, but it also means sellers may need to be realistic about expectations. If you’re planning to resell later, the current market indicates that value retention is decent rather than standout. The good news is that the model’s broad appeal, comfort, and strong owner satisfaction can help keep demand steady.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata safe?

The Sonata earns an Acceptable rating in the small overlap frontal-impact test from IIHS and a four-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are the key standard safety technologies called out in testing, and the Limited 2.0T adds forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. That higher trim also brings adaptive cruise control, adaptive high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear parking-assist sensors. The main caveat is the small-overlap result, which falls one step below Good and keeps the car from earning the highest IIHS distinction for that year.

Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.21% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Expert testing says it is thoroughly capable, but not especially engaging.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $8,818, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $9,303 average.
• It’s a refined, polished sedan that owners praise for comfort, reliability, and everyday usefulness.

The bottom line: The 2016 is the better pick if you want a well-rounded Sonata with strong owner satisfaction and a softer current price than last year. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly alternative and still delivers the Sonata’s core strengths.
