Used 2016 Hyundai Sonata for Sale near Alabama

How much does the 2016 Hyundai Sonata cost?

Prices have softened 5.59% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,389 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata a good car?

Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Cost effectiveness.

Owners consistently praise its features, comfort, and overall value, and they also appreciate the technology and the vehicle’s condition even after substantial mileage. That lines up with the Sonata’s role as a practical midsize family sedan that checks the major boxes without trying too hard to be flashy.

The market also looks reasonably favorable, with 27.8% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Reviewers describe it as reliable, and they also highlight its dependable feel, comfort, and value. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by pointing to a car that is smartly engineered, easy to live with, and built around the kind of everyday competence shoppers can count on.

The cost-of-ownership picture also helps, since the Sonata is described as having low ownership costs and strong warranty support. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by heavy use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Sonata?

At 53.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, and how well the electronics and driver-assistance features work in real-world use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sonata is offered in SE, Sport, and Limited trim levels, with the Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T adding the turbocharged engine. The SE is the value play, while the Limited trims bring the richer equipment and the most advanced safety tech.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T use a 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. The turbo version delivers strong low-end torque and broad, linear power, but the sport-tuned setup also brings a firmer ride.
• Safety package: Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are included on the test car, while the Limited 2.0T adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, adaptive high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear parking-assist sensors. The more advanced collision-avoidance tech is a key upgrade on the Limited 2.0T.
• Infotainment: Android Auto smartphone integration is standard, and Hyundai’s Blue Link subscription services are included on every Sonata. The system also provides automatic collision notification, SOS emergency assistance, remote start and door-lock access, stolen-vehicle recovery, and parental speed, curfew, and geofencing alerts.
• Fuel efficiency: The Sport 2.0T returned 25.5 mpg on the test loop and was rated at 26 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2016 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, Sport, Limited, Sport 2.0T, and Limited 2.0T.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the value-focused choice if you want the Sonata’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. It gives you the roomy, comfortable, well-rounded package that defines the car without pushing you into pricier equipment.
• Sport: This trim adds a more expressive look and a sportier feel, making it a better fit if you want a little more style without jumping to the turbo models. It sits in the middle of the lineup and keeps the Sonata’s practical character intact.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want a more upscale cabin and more of the Sonata’s comfort-and-tech appeal. It’s the trim that best matches the car’s “more car than you pay for” personality.
• Sport 2.0T: Choose this if you want the turbocharged engine and stronger acceleration. It brings more power and a firmer, sport-tuned ride, but it’s best for buyers who are comfortable trading some comfort for performance.
• Limited 2.0T: This is the most fully equipped version and the one to target if safety tech matters most. It adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, adaptive high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear parking-assist sensors.

The safety package is strongest on the Limited 2.0T, which is the trim to prioritize if you want the most advanced driver-assistance equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Sonata?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.

• Deal availability: 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,389 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.59% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,300, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

The current average of $9,300 sits slightly below last year's $9,851.

That price movement suggests the Sonata has softened enough to help you buy in at a more favorable point than a year ago. For a future seller, that means you should expect resale to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than on broad market momentum alone.

Because the model is still viewed as a strong value and owners rate it highly, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. If you maintain the car carefully and keep documentation, you’ll be in a better position when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata safe?

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata earns an Acceptable rating in the IIHS small overlap frontal-impact test and a four-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Sonata includes blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert on the test car, and the Limited 2.0T adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, adaptive high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear parking-assist sensors. The forward-collision and automatic emergency braking system is specifically called out as a strong reason to upgrade to the Limited 2.0T.

The main caveat is the Acceptable small-overlap result, which is one step below Good and keeps the car from earning the strongest IIHS recognition for that year.

Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.59% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It’s a thoroughly capable midsize sedan that prioritizes comfort, value, and everyday usefulness over emotional appeal.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $8,862, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $9,300 average.
• It’s a refined, polished take on the Sonata with broad strengths for comfort and everyday usefulness.

The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced buy, the 2016 is the safer pick because it combines strong owner satisfaction, solid expert ratings, and a healthy used-car supply. If your main goal is to spend less up front, the 2015 is the better value play, especially if you find one in excellent condition.
