How much does the 2016 Hyundai Elantra cost?

Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

You’re looking at a compact car that’s framed as roomy, efficient, simple, and safe, so it fits well if you want an easy everyday sedan rather than something flashy or demanding. Owners repeatedly praise its comfort, reliability, excellent fuel economy, smooth ride, and attractive design. That combination makes it especially appealing if you value low-stress commuting and strong day-to-day practicality.

There are 29.2% good or great deals in the market, which suggests you can still find attractive pricing if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Drivers consistently describe it as reliable, and the owner feedback also points to a trouble-free, dependable ownership experience. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by highlighting favorable dependability ratings and low predicted ownership costs. It also notes the warranty and roadside assistance coverage, including 5 years or 60,000 miles of vehicle coverage and 10 years or 100,000 miles for the engine and transmission.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the core mechanical package and more about finding a well-kept example with complete maintenance history.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?

At 45.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had any prior damage. Focus on overall condition, signs of repair quality, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim you’re considering. Because some shoppers have also noted missing convenience features, it’s worth confirming the exact equipment list before you buy.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE is the entry point, while the Value Edition adds 16-inch aluminum wheels and a more polished look than the plastic wheel covers common on entry-level cars. The Limited brings a more upscale cabin feel, and the Sport is the more powerful, tighter-suspension choice.
• Powertrain: Most versions use a 145-hp 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. The SE comes with a 6-speed manual, while the Value Edition and Limited use a 6-speed automatic with a manual shift gate and Active Eco setting.
• Safety package: A reversing camera is standard on all but the base SE. The car is not available with modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies.
• Infotainment: The SE can get a touchscreen radio with Bluetooth, while higher versions add a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Pandora access, navigation, premium audio, and Blue Link subscription services.
• Fuel efficiency: The official EPA ratings are 28 mpg city/38 highway/32 combined, and the test loop returned 33.8 mpg.

Which 2016 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2016 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, Value Edition, Sport, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the least expensive path into the Elantra, but it’s also the most basic. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and are comfortable giving up some convenience features.
• Value Edition: This is the best-value trim. It adds 16-inch aluminum wheels and a more upscale appearance, while keeping the Elantra’s core value proposition intact.
• Sport: Choose this if you want the more powerful setup and a tighter suspension. It’s the right pick if driving feel matters more to you than comfort-first tuning.
• Limited: This is the most upscale choice, with the richest feature set and the most polished cabin presentation. It suits you if you want the Elantra to feel closer to a compact near-luxury experience.

The reversing camera is standard on all but the base SE, so that trim-level safety gap is worth keeping in mind.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you have room to shop, but the best listings still deserve quick attention.

• Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,296 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.14% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 45.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,971, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $8,235 sits slightly below last year's $8,502.

That softer pricing suggests the Elantra has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you purchase near the lower end of the range and keep the car in good condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell. Strong value positioning and broad appeal can also help keep demand steady in the used market.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The Elantra earns five-star ratings from NHTSA and Good ratings in all IIHS tests except the small overlap frontal impact evaluation, where it receives an Acceptable rating.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety package includes a reversing camera, though it is standard only on all but the base SE. The car is not available with modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies, which is an important limitation if you want the latest active-safety features. The small-overlap IIHS result is the main caveat to keep in mind.

Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 45.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.14% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It balances value, comfort, and practicality with a roomy, efficient, simple, and safe character.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,511, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,235 average.
• It offers strong value, generous space, and useful features.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $9,397, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,235 average.
• It brings a fresh redesign with stronger technology, safety, and a more upscale feel.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, value, and proven owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the smart middle ground. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 is the cheaper route; if you want a newer-feeling car with more tech, the 2017 is the upgrade path.
