Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?

Generally — the 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 4.3/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Drivers consistently praise its great fuel economy, reliability, and fun driving experience. They also like its attractive design and affordable features compared with competitors. For you, that means this model fits best if you want a compact car that makes the commute feel more engaging without giving up everyday value.

Only 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is somewhat selective even if the car itself has broad appeal.

Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to reliability and a trouble-free ownership experience, while expert commentary says the car is strong on reliability and the costs associated with ownership. The performance write-up also describes the car as refined and dynamically inspired, which supports the sense that it’s built to be a car you can count on over time.

If you’re shopping used, the main long-term ownership risk is choosing a car that hasn’t been maintained as carefully as its reputation suggests.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA3?

At 51.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because this model is praised for its driving feel and value, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-kept example is much more likely to deliver the ownership experience you want. If you’re comparing cars, focus on maintenance records, interior wear, and whether the equipment on the car matches the trim you expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sport trim is the entry point, while Touring and Grand Touring add more equipment and a more upscale feel. The base trim can leave you wanting more if you care about convenience and safety features, since some items are optional there rather than standard.
• Powertrain: You can choose a 155-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in the Mazda3 i or a 184-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder in the Mazda3 s. The smaller engine is the efficiency-minded choice, while the larger one gives you stronger acceleration.
• Safety package: A blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on Touring and Grand Touring and optional on Sport. The Technology Package adds dynamic cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive HID headlights with automatic high-beam operation, and lane-departure warning on Grand Touring models with an automatic transmission.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect is standard and includes Bluetooth with music streaming, HD Radio, satellite radio, Internet radio, selected social media access, text-message delivery and reply, and two USB ports. It also supports an Active Driving Display on top-shelf versions.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine returned 28.5 mpg in testing, while the 2.5-liter automatic returned 26.7 mpg. The write-up also notes that real-world fuel economy fell below the EPA estimates in both cases.

Which 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the value play if you want the Mazda3’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. It gives you the fun-to-drive character and can be equipped with useful safety tech, but some features are optional rather than standard.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday convenience and makes the car feel better equipped without jumping all the way to the top end.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the most upscale version, with the richest feature set and access to the Technology Package and Active Driving Display.

The safety package is strongest on Touring and Grand Touring, while Sport leaves some of those features optional.

• Inventory: There are 648 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 5.00% year-over-year.

If you find a listing below $10,772, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $12,116 sits slightly above last year's $11,539.

That upward move suggests the car has held demand well enough to support pricing. For a future seller, that’s a useful sign: if you buy carefully and keep the car in strong condition, you may be able to preserve more of its value than with a weaker-selling compact car. The relatively tight spread between the yearly low and high also suggests the market has been fairly consistent.

Should I buy a 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 5.00% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It emphasizes driving enjoyment while still offering strong safety and value.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,018, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $12,116 average.
• It feels more upscale than its badge suggests.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $13,432, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $12,116 average.
• It adds a refresh and G-Vectoring Control for a more polished drive.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest balance of price, safety, and driving enjoyment, the 2016 is the primary pick. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2015 is the better value route, while the 2017 makes sense if you want the update and can stretch your budget.
