Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Mustang stands out because Ford treated it as more than a simple carryover after the car’s 50th anniversary year. According to the test-drive summary, it brought back some old favorites and added new surprises to keep the pony car fresh, including hood-mounted turn signals that first appeared in ’67, new Black Accent and California Special packages, and the GT Performance package finally becoming available for the convertible.
It also arrived with the Sync 3 infotainment system, which debuted just in time for the Mustang’s 51st birthday. That helps make the 2016 Mustang appealing to buyers who want a classic-looking performance car with updated tech and a broader mix of appearance and performance packages. At the same time, owner feedback suggests the car’s strengths are its fun, smooth ride, performance, handling, and style, while some drivers were disappointed by the lack of Apple CarPlay and had mixed feelings about fuel economy on certain models.

So beautiful, top up or down its a head- turner. Super comfortable to drive around town or on the highway, all good. Ford did a good job on the infotainment, plug and play to use Google maps. The sport mode really gets it while normal mode helps save gas. Best in class cargo means you can fit your stuff no problem. I have the 6 speed stick, notchy and fun all the time. The 4 cylinder turbo engine Ecoboost means the car is way lighter than the GT which makes this really easy to drive and nimble. The brakes are great. At 34,000 and have no issues, very reliable. I love this car. What a delight. They say things dont make your life better but this car proves otherwise!

The premium is the perfect mix of luxury meets sport. Plenty of options included adds lots of comfort. And this GT is fast with amazing handling and control. My wife can take it to the grocery store without being scared of it and I can drop it in sport mode and tear up the asphalt.

I have a very well equipped Ecoboost Premium. The car rides exceptionally well. The 4 cyl has plenty of power and pulls close to 30 MPG on the highway. The car is a joy to drive and is my 5th Mustang. Having owned some older generations, this is the best one yet. Lots of creature comforts in this model and a nice mix of retro and new.

How much does the 2016 Ford Mustang cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,647 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,383 |
| Year-Round High | $19,973 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,707 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.38% |
Prices have softened 5.38% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,795 listings available, which suggests you have a decent amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Ford Mustang earns a 4.85/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its fun and smooth ride, performance, and handling, and they also like its stylish design and the value it offers compared with similar cars. That lines up well with the overview: you’re looking at a classic-looking performance car with updated tech and a broader mix of appearance and performance packages. For shoppers who want a pony car that feels engaging without giving up everyday usability, that combination is a strong fit.
30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there’s still room to find a competitive offer.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels fun, smooth, and dependable enough to earn repeat praise for performance and handling. It also highlights value and a generally satisfying ownership experience, which supports the idea that this is a car many drivers feel good about keeping. The expert drive notes reinforce that the Mustang is a capable, confidence-inspiring pony car with a modern independent rear suspension and a chassis that handles its weight with poise.
Ford also notes that the Mustang remains one of the better deals in the sports-car segment, which can help reduce the sting of ownership if you’re shopping carefully. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition and maintenance history matter a lot, especially on cars that may have been driven hard.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Mustang?
At 56.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven as a weekend performance car. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment and wear match its mileage and asking price. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example with the most complete service history is usually the safer buy.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base car comes with a strong standard feature set, including 17-inch alloys, automatic xenon headlights, LED taillights, keyless entry and ignition, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and MyKey. Higher trims add more comfort and style, while the Premium models bring the most everyday convenience.
- Powertrain: You can shop the V6, EcoBoost turbo four, or V8, and the performance spread is wide. The V6 is the least powerful but still efficient for the class, the EcoBoost adds stronger torque and better fuel economy, and the V8 is the choice if you want the most muscle.
- Safety package: Premium models can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning. All Mustangs can add optional front and rear parking sensors.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 is the big tech upgrade here, and the upgraded system uses an 8-inch touchscreen. The Premium setup also adds a 9-speaker audio system, and the interface is a major improvement over the older system.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 returns 17 mpg city/28 highway/21 combined with the 6-speed manual and 22 mpg combined with the automatic. The EcoBoost gets 22/31/26 with the manual or 21/32/25 with the automatic. The V8 is rated at 15/25/19.
Which 2016 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford Mustang is offered in 5 trim levels: V6, EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium.
Here's the short version:
- V6: This is the value play if you want the Mustang look and a strong standard equipment list without stretching the budget. It gives you the classic entry point, but it’s the least feature-rich trim, so it makes the most sense if price matters most.
- EcoBoost: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the turbo four-cylinder’s stronger torque and keeps the car relatively efficient. If you want a more modern-feeling Mustang without jumping to V8 pricing, this is the trim to start with.
- EcoBoost Premium: Choose this if you want the best mix of tech and comfort in the four-cylinder lineup. It adds Sync 3, an 8-inch touchscreen, ambient lighting, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, dual-zone climate control, and other upscale touches.
- GT: This is the trim for you if V8 power is the priority. It trades away some of the Premium comfort features, but it gives you the bigger engine, bigger brakes, and available performance hardware that define the GT experience.
- GT Premium: This is the most complete Mustang in the lineup if you want V8 performance and the nicer cabin. It restores the Premium equipment while keeping the GT’s stronger hardware, making it the most well-rounded choice if your budget allows.
Premium models are also the ones that can add the advanced driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Mustang?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,795 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.38% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,383, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $18,647 sits slightly below last year's $19,707.
That decline suggests the market has softened, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. If you own one, pricing it competitively will matter, especially because the model’s value has already moved down from where it was a year ago. Well-kept examples should still attract interest, but modified or rough-condition cars may need sharper pricing to move.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang safe?
The 2016 Ford Mustang earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Good rating from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a full suite of airbags. Premium models can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning, while all Mustangs can add front and rear parking sensors. That gives you a solid safety foundation, especially if you choose a better-equipped trim.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.38% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Ford added Sync 3 and fresh appearance and performance packages, making this year feel more updated than a simple carryover.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $19,579, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $18,647 average.
- It was a redesigned version of Ford’s iconic sports coupe with a big improvement in dynamics and technology.
The bottom line: If you want the better-value buy, the 2016 is the stronger target because prices have eased and the car adds meaningful updates. If you’re comparing closely and find a cleaner 2015 with the right equipment, it can still make sense for buyers who prioritize the redesign-year appeal over the lower current market price.
