Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford F-150 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford F-150 stands out as a pickup that leans hard into luxury without abandoning its truck identity. Ford’s F-150 Limited is described as a genuine luxury vehicle in all but name, and it is presented as loaded with extras and tasteful trimmings. That combination gives it a more upscale feel than buyers might expect from a full-size, light-duty pickup.
What makes it especially appealing is the way those upscale touches are paired with a strong overall reputation. The summary calls it arguably the best full-size, light-duty pickup you can buy, which helps explain why it can look like a value despite a high price. For shoppers who want a truck that feels more refined than rugged, the 2016 Ford F-150 offers a distinctive blend of comfort, equipment, and prestige.
At the same time, the high price is part of the story, and it is worth keeping in mind for used buyers. The available owner feedback also points to comfort, power, and a smooth ride as recurring strengths, while noting that storage options can feel limited and that higher-mileage examples may be expensive.

First off, the waffles color (a beautiful, unique shade) really makes this truck stand out. It turns heads everywhere I go. The leather interior gives it a premium feel, and the sunroof adds an open, airy vibe, especially on sunny drives. This truck is packed with features—from the tech to the comfort, it has everything you could want. Whether it’s advanced infotainment, driver assists, or the luxury finishes, it doesn’t miss. The engine is powerful and responsive, making highway merges and towing feel effortless.

Great value for the vehicle. High mileage but that is not an issue like it used to be.

The truck spent the first 5 years in Michigan. There was new undercoating over the entire bottom of vehicle. In the cracks of the leaf springs and other crevices I could see crusty rust. Didn’t even take it for a drive.

Drivers consistently praise its comfort, power, smooth ride, and spacious interior. The user feedback also points to a strong feature set and a truck that feels refined without losing its pickup identity. In use, that makes it especially appealing if you want a full-size truck that can handle work duties while still feeling upscale.
The market also shows 28.9% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Ford F-150 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback repeatedly describes the truck as reliable and dependable, with many owners saying they count on it for everyday use. The expert evaluation also notes that the F-150 rates better than average for reliability, and the powertrain is described as strong and confidence-inspiring. Ford also includes free 911 Assist through Sync, which adds a useful ownership perk without a monthly subscription.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is age-related wear on higher-mileage examples, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford F-150?
At 66.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that the truck was used hard. Because this model can be expensive when it’s well equipped, condition should matter as much as mileage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Limited trim is presented as the luxury-focused version, with 22-inch wheels, satin-finish accents, Mojave leather, genuine eucalyptus wood, and aluminum trim. The XL is the more basic starting point, so you should expect fewer upscale touches there.
- Powertrain: The standard twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 makes 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, and it’s paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It’s also described as strong, responsive, and capable of 11,800 pounds of towing.
- Safety package: Ford offers adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, plus blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and a lane-keeping system. Some features are available rather than standard, so you should confirm equipment on the exact truck you’re considering.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 brings a capacitive touch display, swipe capability, improved voice recognition, Siri compatibility, Wi-Fi software updates, and available navigation with pinch-to-zoom. The system is a major upgrade over the previous setup.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says this truck should return 17 mpg combined, and the expert test loop returned 16.7 mpg.
Which 2016 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford F-150 is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the entry point, and it makes the most sense if you want the F-150’s core capability without paying for luxury extras. It’s the trim to choose if value and simplicity matter most.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience without pushing into luxury pricing. If you want a balanced used F-150, this is the trim to focus on first.
- Lariat: This is the step up if you want a more upscale cabin and a richer feature mix. It suits you if comfort matters nearly as much as capability.
- King Ranch: This trim leans into premium materials and a more distinctive upscale personality. It’s a good fit if you want your truck to feel special inside and out.
- Platinum: This is the choice if you want a high-end truck with a more polished, luxury-oriented presentation. It makes the most sense for buyers who care about refinement and equipment.
- Limited: This is the top luxury play, with the most upscale presentation and the strongest “genuine luxury vehicle” feel. Buy this if you want the most premium version and are comfortable paying for it.
Ford’s safety and driver-assistance features are available across the lineup, but you should verify which ones are fitted to the specific trim and truck you’re shopping.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford F-150?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,398 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.69% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,891.18, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford F-150's resale value?
The current average of $18,917 sits slightly below last year's $20,272.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than just model-year desirability. Well-kept trucks with desirable features should hold up better than rougher, higher-mileage examples.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford F-150 safe?
The Ford F-150 earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a four-star rollover resistance rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety calls it a Top Safety Pick, though it is not eligible for Top Safety Pick+ because it lacks automatic emergency braking.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford includes 911 Assist through Sync, which can automatically contact emergency responders if the airbags deploy and your paired device is in the vehicle. Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and a lane-keeping system. You should note that brake support is not the same as automatic emergency braking, and the lane-keeping and forward-warning systems can produce false alerts in some situations.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds a luxury-focused Limited trim and upgraded Sync 3 tech.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $17,721, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $18,917 average.
- It brings aluminum body construction and turbocharged power.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $21,589, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,917 average.
- It brings back the Raptor with serious off-road hardware.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of luxury feel, strong owner satisfaction, and current-market value, the 2016 is the one to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 is the cheaper path into the same generation, while the 2017 makes sense if you specifically want the Raptor-focused upgrade.
