Is the 2016 Dodge Charger reliable?

The expert notes also emphasize that the Charger offers more substance than its image suggests, which supports the idea that it can be a car you count on over time.

The expert commentary also says the Charger saves money on gas for its size, and it highlights affordable SE and SXT versions as especially cost-conscious choices. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge suggests, so a careful inspection is worth your time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Dodge Charger?

At 49.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or optioned heavily. Focus on body condition, evidence of prior repairs, and whether the equipment on the car matches the seller’s description. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example is usually worth paying a bit more for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SXT test car shows that the base setup can feel well equipped, but the content also points to feature gaps versus higher-spec versions, including missing high-end conveniences like massage seats and a 360 camera.
• Powertrain: The Charger SE and SXT use a 3.6-liter V6 with an 8-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available as an option.
• Safety package: Available driver-assistance tech includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist.
• Infotainment: The cabin includes Uconnect with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, and the system is described as easy and intuitive.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 returned 22.9 mpg in combined driving and is described as essentially matching the EPA’s 23 mpg combined estimate.

Which 2016 Dodge Charger trim should I buy?

The 2016 Dodge Charger is offered in 2 trim levels: SE, SXT.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point, and the content suggests it can still be a smart value if you want the Charger’s core V6 power and rear-drive character without stretching your budget.
• SXT: This is the better-value choice for most shoppers because it adds the more complete everyday experience reflected in the test car’s equipment and keeps the Charger’s strong mix of style, comfort, and performance.

The safety content notes that driver-assistance features are available as upgrades, so check carefully for the specific package on any used example.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Dodge Charger?

Act selectively, because this is still a seller’s market even though there are some good opportunities if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 881 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.99% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 49.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,965, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Dodge Charger's resale value?

The current average of $15,941 sits slightly above last year's $15,478.

That upward move suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, you’re starting from a price point that has already shown some resilience. For a future seller, that can help support a steadier exit price than you might expect from a mainstream sedan.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Dodge Charger safe?

The Charger gets a Marginal rating in the small overlap frontal impact crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The available driver-assistance suite includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. The content also notes that the Charger earns top ratings from both the federal government and the IIHS in other crash-test assessments, along with a Superior rating for crash-avoidance technology.

The main caveat is that the small overlap frontal result is weaker than the rest of the safety picture, so you should pay close attention to the car’s condition and equipment level when shopping used.

Should I buy a 2016 Dodge Charger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 49.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.99% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 blends strong value, satisfying performance, and a surprisingly refined family-sedan character.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,569, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $15,941 average.
• It leans harder into aggressive styling and keeps an easy-to-live-with cabin.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $18,064, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $15,941 average.
• It emphasizes a louder, more attention-grabbing muscle-car personality.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, satisfaction, and everyday usefulness, the 2016 is the primary path to consider. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 can save you money while keeping the Charger formula intact.
