Is the 2016 Dodge Charger a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Dodge Charger earns a 4.8/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

Drivers consistently praise its powerful acceleration, stylish design, and comfortable interior. The owner feedback also points to strong value for the features you get, which fits the Charger’s role as a family sedan that feels more rewarding than its image suggests.

With its broad appeal as a practical sedan that still delivers personality, it works well if you want something more expressive than the average commuter car. 24.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2016 Dodge Charger reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, trouble-free, and worth counting on over time. The expert driving notes also describe it as a car with substantial everyday usability and strong all-around substance, which supports the case for long-term ownership.

The cost-effectiveness notes add that the Charger can be economical to run for a large sedan, especially in SE or SXT form. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge suggests.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Dodge Charger?

At 49.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or equipped with optional packages. Focus on body condition, interior wear, and whether the equipment on the car matches the listing description.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SXT test car is described as one trim rung up from the base model, and the base setup can feel sparse compared with better-equipped versions. The cabin is plain but easy to use, and higher trims or packages add more polish and convenience.
• Powertrain: All SE and SXT models use a 3.6-liter V6 with an 8-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available. The V6 is described as excellent, and it returned 22.9 mpg in combined driving.
• Safety package: Available driver-assistance tech includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. Some of these features are optional rather than standard.
• Infotainment: The Charger uses an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Uconnect, and it offers a deep set of programmable settings. The system can be slow at times, and the reversing camera resolution is poor at night.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 returned 22.9 mpg in combined driving, essentially matching the EPA estimate of 23 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2016 Dodge Charger trim should I buy?

The 2016 Dodge Charger is offered in 2 trim levels: SE and SXT.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Charger’s core V6 power and rear-drive character at the lowest cost. It is the trim to target if value matters most.
• SXT: This is the better-value choice because it adds more of the Charger’s everyday appeal while keeping the same strong V6 foundation. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the trim to focus on.

The safety content notes that some driver-assistance technologies are available as upgrades rather than standard equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Dodge Charger?

The market looks like a seller’s market, so you should act selectively and move quickly when you find a strong listing.

• Deal availability: 24.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 885 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 3.48% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 49.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,965, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Dodge Charger's resale value?

The current average of $15,855 sits slightly above last year's $15,322.

That upward move suggests the Charger has held buyer interest well enough to support pricing. If demand stays steady, sellers may continue to benefit from the model’s mix of style, performance, and value.

The fact that the average price is still close to the year-round low and high range also suggests the market is active rather than stagnant. For a future seller, that usually means you can still find buyers if the car is clean, well maintained, and fairly equipped.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Dodge Charger safe?

The Charger gets a Marginal rating in the small overlap frontal impact crash test from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, while other crash-test assessments earn top ratings from both the federal government and the IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The available driver-assistance suite includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. Some of these features are optional, so you should confirm the exact equipment on any used example.

The small-overlap result is the main caveat to keep in mind. If safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to whether the car has the available crash-avoidance tech and inspect the specific vehicle’s equipment carefully.

Should I buy a 2016 Dodge Charger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 24.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 49.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 3.48% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 blends strong value, broad usability, and a more refined personality than its image suggests.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,754, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $15,855 average.
• It leans harder into aggressive styling and offers a more dramatic performance range.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $18,131, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $15,855 average.
• It emphasizes a louder, more attention-grabbing muscle-car personality.

The bottom line: The 2016 is the best all-around pick if you want the Charger’s mix of style, performance, and value without paying newer-year pricing. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 is the better price-first alternative.
