Is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado a good car?

Generally — the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado earns 4.2/5 from owners and 6.67/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Owners most often praise its value, performance, and comfort, along with its manageable size and capability. The Colorado’s smaller footprint also fits the use case described in the overview: you get a midsize truck that is easier to live with than a full-size pickup, while still offering useful versatility. A smaller bed and the desire for more features come up as recurring tradeoffs, so it works best if you value everyday usability over maximum truck size.

28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a truck that feels dependable, with many drivers describing it as a value-oriented choice that performs well and remains comfortable over time. The expert notes also support that impression by emphasizing the Colorado’s practical, easy-to-live-with nature and its ability to handle everyday truck duties without feeling oversized. The diesel option adds another layer of confidence for buyers who want stronger torque and a more distinctive powertrain.

Chevy also highlights a maintenance perk in the ownership experience, which can help reduce early service friction for some buyers.

For used shoppers, the main long-term risk is paying a premium for a truck that may need careful feature and condition checks to justify its price.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-priced trim or a truck with added equipment. Pay close attention to body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the truck’s features match the asking price. Because this model can command a premium, condition matters a lot more than mileage alone.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Base trim comes with LED headlights, a 6-speaker stereo, a power driver’s seat, and a USB port, while the LT adds power mirrors, an additional USB port in the center console, and 4G LTE hotspot capability. The Z71 adds a power-locking tailgate, heavy-duty suspension, all-terrain tires, and remote start, so it is the most feature-rich choice if you want a more truck-focused setup.
• Powertrain: You can choose between a 200-horsepower inline four-cylinder, a 305-horsepower 3.6-liter V6, and a 181-horsepower 2.8-liter Duramax diesel with 369 pound-feet of torque. The diesel delivers the strongest efficiency, while the V6 is the more common upgrade if you want more everyday power.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes dual-stage front impact and side impact airbags, OnStar crash response, and a backup camera. Available features include lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, and the driver’s-side mirror includes a wide-angle inset mirror to help reduce the left blind spot.
• Infotainment: MyLink uses a 4.2-inch color screen in base form, while other models get an 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay is available, and the system supports voice control for navigation and messaging.
• Fuel efficiency: The diesel gets 22 mpg city/31 highway/25 combined with rear-wheel drive and 20/29/23 with 4WD. The 3.6-liter V6 with 4WD gets 17/24/20.

Which 2016 Chevrolet Colorado trim should I buy?

The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, WT, LT, and Z71.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the least expensive path into the Colorado, but it is also the most stripped-down. You get the essentials, including LED headlights, a 6-speaker stereo, a power driver’s seat, and a USB port, so it makes sense if you mainly want the truck’s core utility and plan to keep costs down.
• WT: The WT is the work-oriented step up, and it is the trim to consider if you want a straightforward truck without chasing extra comfort or tech. It should appeal to buyers who care more about basic capability than convenience features.
• LT: The LT is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like power mirrors, an extra USB port, and 4G LTE hotspot capability. If you want a better balance of price and livability, this is the trim to focus on.
• Z71: The Z71 is the most equipped and truck-focused version, with a power-locking tailgate, heavy-duty suspension, all-terrain tires, and remote start. It is the right pick if you want the most rugged-feeling Colorado and are willing to pay more for it.

Available safety features include lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, so check whether the trim you’re considering includes the driver-assistance equipment you want.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

This is a moderate market, so selective buyers can still find value if they compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,468 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.44% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,873, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado's resale value?

The current average of $17,033 sits slightly below last year's $17,823.

That decline suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price carefully to stay competitive. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to last year’s average. The Colorado’s broad appeal as a midsize truck should help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado safe?

The Colorado earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes dual-stage front impact and side impact airbags, OnStar crash response, and a backup camera. Available driver-assistance features include lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, and the driver’s-side mirror includes a wide-angle inset mirror to help reduce the left blind spot. That mix gives you a solid baseline, but you should verify whether the specific truck you’re considering has the added safety tech you want.

Should I buy a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.44% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds a diesel option that gives the Colorado extra distinction in the midsize truck segment.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $16,029, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,033 average.
• It returned after a hiatus with modern styling, safety, and technology.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger shopping case, the 2016 is the better target because prices have eased and the truck brings useful powertrain and equipment choices. If your priority is saving money above all else, the 2015 is the better value play, especially if you find a clean example with the features you need.
