What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a hands-on inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. Because this truck is often bought for versatility, you should also focus on how well the cabin, bed, and key convenience features have held up in real use. If you are comparing multiple listings, condition should matter as much as mileage and price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Base trim comes with LED headlights, a 6-speaker stereo, a power driver’s seat, and a USB port, while the LT adds power mirrors, an additional USB port in the center console, and 4G LTE hotspot capabilities. The Z71 adds a power-locking tailgate, heavy-duty suspension, all-terrain tires, and remote start.
• Powertrain: The Colorado offers a base inline 4-cylinder with 200 horsepower, a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 horsepower, and a 2.8-liter Duramax diesel with 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The diesel delivers the best fuel economy of the group, and the gas I4 can feel weak at times.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes dual-stage front impact and side impact airbags, OnStar crash response, and a backup camera. Available features include lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, and the driver’s-side mirror includes a wide-angle inset mirror to help reduce the left blind spot.
• Infotainment: MyLink uses a 4.2-inch color screen in base form, while other models get an 8-inch touchscreen. It supports Apple CarPlay, voice control, and navigation prompts through the digital trip screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The diesel gets 22 mpg city/31 highway/25 combined with rear-wheel drive, and 20/29/23 with 4WD. The 3.6-liter V6 with 4WD gets 17/24/20.

Which 2016 Chevrolet Colorado trim should I buy?

The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, WT, LT, Z71.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essentials, including LED headlights, a 6-speaker stereo, a power driver’s seat, and a USB port. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Colorado, but it is the most stripped-down choice.
• WT: This trim is part of the core lineup, but the available information here does not add a distinct equipment advantage over the Base trim. If you are shopping value, you will want to compare it carefully against the Base and LT before deciding.
• LT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds power mirrors, an extra USB port, and 4G LTE hotspot capability. If you want a more modern daily driver without jumping to the most expensive version, this is the trim to focus on.
• Z71: This is the most truck-focused version, with a power-locking tailgate, heavy-duty suspension, all-terrain tires, and remote start. It suits you best if you want the most rugged setup in the lineup.

The safety equipment includes available lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, while every Colorado comes with a backup camera.

• Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,478 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.98% compared with last year.

What is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado's resale value?

The current average of $17,144 sits slightly below last year's $17,671.

That softer pricing suggests the Colorado has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stays steady. If you buy at the right price and keep the truck in strong condition, you may be better positioned when it is time to resell. The model’s broad appeal as a manageable midsize pickup should also help keep buyer interest healthy.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado safe?

The Colorado earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes with dual-stage front impact and side impact airbags, OnStar crash response, and a backup camera as standard equipment. Available driver-assistance features include lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert, and the driver’s-side mirror includes a wide-angle inset mirror to help reduce blind spots. If you are comparing listings, pay close attention to whether a truck has the available safety tech you want, since some features are optional rather than standard.

Should I buy a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.98% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 Colorado stands out as a midsize pickup that blends a handsome look with real versatility.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $15,911, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,144 average.
• It offers modern styling, safety, and technology in a more affordable midsize package.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the Colorado’s core appeal.

How does the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado compare to the 2016 GMC Canyon?

Our experts score the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado 6.7/10 and the 2016 GMC Canyon 6.3/10. The Colorado is the better value on average, with a lower used price and more listings to choose from. The Canyon is priced higher and has fewer listings, so you may have to work harder to find the right deal. Both trucks share the same engine, fuel economy, and core capability, so your decision may come down to price and availability more than hardware.
