CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW X5

Summary
With 1,250 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,898, 33.3% of 2016 BMW X5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW X5 4.75 / 5 stars.
61.4% of 2016 X5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW X5 stands out as a luxury SUV that still puts driving feel at the center of the experience. In the third-generation X5, BMW had already moved the design toward a cleaner, more conservative look while adding refinement and sophistication, and the model kept the qualities owners and critics liked from the previous version. For 2016, BMW also added a new plug-in hybrid powertrain based on a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, giving the X5 a more efficiency-minded option without abandoning its upscale mission.
Even in this generation, the X5 remained a well-rounded midsize SUV with a strong feature set. It offered BMW’s iDrive infotainment technology, many modern safety features, and a luxurious interior with a small, optional third-row seat. The cabin was also described as roomy and comfortable, with generous cargo space and outstanding visibility, which helps explain why the X5 appeals to buyers who want an SUV that feels practical as well as premium.
There are tradeoffs, though. The 2016 BMW X5 is not the cheapest SUV to own, and BMW’s split tailgate design has its drawbacks when reaching items that have slid forward in the cargo area. Reliability is also a concern for older luxury SUVs in general, so a well-maintained example with a clear history is the safest way to enjoy what makes this X5 distinctive: a blend of comfort, capability, and unusually rewarding road manners.

This is a great, solid, fuel-efficient car. It accelerates well, breaks easily, is quiet, and has room for luggage, etc. in the back. No emissions for most errands around town, and no EV distance anxiety if you are traveling.

Is the 2016 BMW X5 a good car?
Yes — the 4.75/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the performance, luxurious interior, and feature content, and many say the driving experience feels sporty and hard to beat. The overview also fits that feedback: you get a luxury SUV that still emphasizes driving feel, while remaining practical with roomy seating, generous cargo space, and strong visibility. With 33.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive example.
Is the 2016 BMW X5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that many people find dependable in daily use, with praise centered on the powertrain, comfort, and overall ownership experience. That said, as with any older luxury SUV, long-term ownership risk rises if maintenance has been inconsistent or the vehicle has a complicated option history. For used buyers, the safest path is a well-documented example that has been cared for consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW X5?
At 61.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was minor or structural. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check for wear, deferred maintenance, and signs of expensive repairs. Focus especially on overall condition, service records, and how well the vehicle has been maintained, since those factors matter more on an older luxury SUV.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW X5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the best examples.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,256 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.68% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,896, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $13,896 sits slightly below last year's $15,557.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the vehicle in excellent condition, you can reduce the impact of depreciation. The strongest resale prospects usually come from clean, well-maintained examples with clear service history and broad buyer appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.68% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $12,688, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,896 average.
- It emphasizes BMW’s signature driving feel and SUV practicality.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping target, the 2016 is the stronger primary choice because it combines strong owner satisfaction, a softer price trend, and a healthy inventory pool. If your main goal is to spend less upfront, the 2015 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one with a clean history and solid maintenance records.
