CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW M4

Summary
With 212 currently listed for sale and an average price of $42,128.00, 32.1% of 2016 BMW M4s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW M4 5 / 5 stars.
54.7% of 2016 M4 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW M4 stands out as a high-performance coupe that blends everyday usability with serious speed. It uses a twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline-six engine with 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, and BMW paired that with rear-wheel drive and a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmissions. The car also brings motorsport-derived hardware such as lightweight suspension and body parts, an Active M Differential, and standard M compound brakes, which help explain why it feels so focused on enthusiastic driving.
What makes the 2016 model especially distinctive is how much performance equipment BMW packed into a car that still came with leather upholstery, climate control, LED headlights, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The M4’s bodywork is more aggressive than the regular 4 Series, with wider front fenders, flared rear wheel arches, a rear spoiler, and a bulging hood power dome, while coupe versions use a carbon-fiber roof to reduce weight. In 2016, BMW also added the M4 Competition Package as an option, bringing 20-inch alloy wheels, an additional 19 horsepower, uprated springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, black chrome tail pipes, and Shadow Line exterior trim.
For buyers, the appeal is straightforward: the 2016 BMW M4 is quick, well-equipped, and rewarding to drive, with sharp handling and strong braking among the traits owners praise. It is also practical for a car with such extreme performance, though it is still a premium sports car, so running costs and purchase prices can be significant. The convertible’s small boot is a limitation to keep in mind, but for shoppers who want a focused performance car with a manual transmission option and a strong enthusiast following, the 2016 M4 has a lot going for it.

Very reliable, quick, and stylish. Gets a lot of attention, even from haters, which there are a few. With Xdrive and launch control it catapults from the intersection. Very quiet. Brakes are awesome from high speed (M package). The rear hatch allows for a ton of room. Highly recommend.

How much does the 2016 BMW M4 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $42,465 |
| Year-Round Low | $40,678.52 |
| Year-Round High | $48,362.53 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $42,729 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −0.62% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 207 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $40,678.52, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 BMW M4 a good car?
Yes — the 2016 BMW M4 earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise its sharp handling, powerful performance, and stylish design. The manual transmission option is another recurring highlight, and many shoppers also value how well it balances sports-car excitement with everyday usability. The overview backs that up: you get a focused performance coupe with serious speed, strong braking, and enough equipment to make it livable day to day.
With 32.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a competitively priced example.
Is the 2016 BMW M4 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary also points to the manual transmission option as a reliability-positive trait, and it uses language that emphasizes dependable ownership and a car you can count on. That matters here because the M4 is a high-performance used car, so strong owner confidence can help offset some of the usual concerns around spirited driving and age.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the rating and more about how each individual car was maintained and driven.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW M4?
At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on suspension, brakes, tires, and any signs of hard use. Because this is a performance car, condition matters more than mileage alone, so focus on maintenance records, cosmetic wear, and evidence of track-style driving.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW M4?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 207 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $40,678.52, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 BMW M4's resale value?
The current average of $42,465 sits slightly below last year's $42,729.
That small decline suggests the market has been fairly stable rather than sharply weakening, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price pattern can make it easier to estimate your exit value, especially if you buy well and keep the car in strong condition. For a performance model like this, clean history and careful upkeep should matter a lot when it comes time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW M4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a well-liked, high-performance M4 with stable pricing and a strong owner satisfaction signal, the 2016 model year is a solid primary target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-documented example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price.
