CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW 6 Series

Summary
With 194 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,421, 32.5% of 2016 BMW 6 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW 6 Series 5 / 5 stars.
53.6% of 2016 BMW 6 Series listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW 6 Series sits in the third-generation lineup, and what makes it distinctive is the way it blends style, performance, and luxury in a low-slung grand touring package. BMW offered it in coupe, convertible, and four-door Gran Coupe body styles, and this generation was also the first to add the Gran Coupe format. By 2016, the car had already received a visual refresh with new headlights and bumpers, and it also got a tech update with a new 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen running iDrive 6.0. That combination gives the 2016 model a more modern feel than earlier versions while preserving the 6 Series’ sleek, dramatic character.
Mechanically, the 2016 BMW 6 Series is defined by strong performance and a broad spread of powertrains. The mainstream 640i used a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight six with 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, while the 650i used a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. BMW also offered the M6, with 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, and the Alpina B6 Gran Coupe for buyers who wanted something even more exclusive. The car’s strengths are clear: it is engaging to drive, stylish, and very comfortable, with a well-appointed cabin and available driver-assistance features such as blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control.
There are tradeoffs, though, and they matter for shoppers. The back seat is snug even in the Gran Coupe, so the four-door body style is more about appearance than true practicality. The 6 Series is also expensive to maintain, and the V8-powered versions are described as less trouble-prone than the six-cylinder models only in the sense that the V8 is more demanding and costly to own. For buyers who want a luxurious, distinctive BMW with real grand touring appeal, the 2016 6 Series stands out for its mix of presence, power, and comfort, even if it is not the easiest car to live with.

This car is undeniably incomparable to anything else out there. It is rock solid and seeps sexiness. One small suggestion would be to have more cup holders in the front of car, and passenger side….but perfection otherwise.

Luxury ride with plenty of power in 6 (640) or 8 (650) cyl model. All the features you’d want/expect and powerful curb appeal. This is a great ride!

Is the 2016 BMW 6 Series a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. The 2016 BMW 6 Series stands out as a low-slung grand touring car that blends style, performance, and luxury, and it offers coupe, convertible, and four-door Gran Coupe body styles. It also feels more modern than earlier versions thanks to the refresh and the 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with iDrive 6.0, while still delivering the sleek, dramatic character that defines the 6 Series.
That mix makes it a strong fit if you want a distinctive luxury car that emphasizes presence and driving enjoyment over everyday practicality. 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 BMW 6 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The 2016 BMW 6 Series is described as engaging to drive, very comfortable, and well appointed, but it is also expensive to maintain. Its broad spread of powertrains and luxury-focused design make it appealing, though the ownership experience is best suited to buyers who are prepared for premium upkeep.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is not just age-related wear but the cost of keeping a complex luxury grand tourer in top condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW 6 Series?
At 54.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Put a premium on a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially for signs of deferred maintenance, cosmetic repairs, and wear that could be expensive to address on a luxury car. Focus on overall condition, because this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been maintained and presented.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW 6 Series?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 192 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.84% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,082, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 BMW 6 Series's resale value?
The current average of $20,375 sits slightly below last year's $20,756.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. Because the market is still active and the car has a distinctive luxury appeal, well-kept examples should remain easier to position than neglected ones. Condition and maintenance history will matter a lot when it comes time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW 6 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want the best balance of modern features, strong owner satisfaction, and a still-reasonable used price, the 2016 is the primary year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a cleaner or better-equipped example offers more value for your budget, but the 2016 already gives you a compelling mix of style, comfort, and market softness.
