CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW 6 Series

Summary
With 146 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,993, 32.9% of 2017 BMW 6 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 6 Series 4.88 / 5 stars.
54.8% of 2017 BMW 6 Series listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 6 Series stands out as a style-first luxury performance car, and its appeal comes from the way it blends glamour with driving enjoyment. Owners praise its stylish design, strong performance, comfort, and handling, and the car’s character is described as a mix of sports car and luxury. That combination makes it attractive to buyers who want something distinctive and rewarding rather than purely practical.
For 2017, the 6 Series belongs to the third-generation lineup, which BMW had redesigned in 2011. In that generation, the mainstream models used an eight-speed automatic transmission, and BMW had already added a visual refresh in 2015 with new headlights and bumpers, followed by a tech update in 2016 with a 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen running iDrive 6.0. The generation also offered driver-assistance features such as blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control, though most were optional. It was also noted for being a comfortable car, while the back seat was snug even in the Gran Coupe.
At the same time, the 2017 BMW 6 Series is not a simple or inexpensive ownership proposition. The car is described as complex and costly to maintain, and the lineup’s depreciation makes it more affordable than its original price might suggest, but not cheap to keep. Some owners also mention blind spots and the car’s weight as drawbacks, which reinforces the idea that this BMW is best suited to buyers who value presence, performance, and luxury over ease of use or low running costs.

Car is beautiful design inside and out...I compared to Mercedes CLS 400. BMW heads up display was great, seat comfort a little better than CLS, instant throttle response (no turbo lag) and superior brakes...more blind spots and felt heavier than CLS (although specs would disagree)

Great styling, great performance. Is not a boxster Porsche, but not a luxury Mercedes SLK. Is the perfect mix of sports car and luxury.

Is the 2017 BMW 6 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2017 BMW 6 Series earns a 4.88/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its stylish design, strong performance, comfort, and handling, and they often describe it as a blend of sports car and luxury. That makes it a good fit if you want something distinctive and rewarding rather than purely practical. With 32.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 BMW 6 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes dependable enjoyment over time, with repeated praise for comfort, performance, and the kind of driving experience people tend to keep coming back to. That said, this is a complex luxury car, so long-term ownership risk is higher than average if you want low-stress, low-cost transportation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 6 Series?
At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially for signs of uneven panel gaps, suspension wear, or other condition issues that can be expensive on a luxury performance car. Because this model is described as complex and costly to maintain, you should focus on overall condition and service history before you focus on trim or options.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 6 Series?

What is the 2017 BMW 6 Series's resale value?
The current average of $22,027 sits slightly below last year's $23,794.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained. Because this model appeals to buyers who want style and performance, a clean example with strong presentation should hold demand better than a neglected one.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 6 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.43% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should focus on the 2017 if you want the strongest mix of current pricing, owner satisfaction, and style-first luxury performance. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may still be worth comparing, but the 2017 stands out as the better choice when you want a well-liked example and can verify condition carefully before buying.
