CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW 5 Series

Summary
With 86 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,853, 17.4% of 2016 BMW 5 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW 5 Series 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW 5 Series stands out as a midsize luxury sedan that still puts a premium on performance and driver involvement, even as it leans more toward comfort than the older, sharper-edged versions of the car. In this generation, BMW offered a broad range of powertrains, including a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the 528i with 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six in the 535i with 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, and a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 in the 550i with 443 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. That spread gives the 5 Series real breadth, from efficient daily driving to serious straight-line punch.
It also brings a useful mix of technology and luxury. BMW added a Parking Assist feature that could steer the car into parallel spaces, and the cabin featured a 10.2-inch screen running iDrive 6, controlled by a click wheel. Available equipment included ventilated front seats, a rear entertainment system, adaptive cruise control, surround view cameras, and a head-up display. The tradeoff is that the system can be complicated to use, and some reliability trackers point to the early F10 years as more troublesome than later versions, with common issues including electrical problems, cooling-system concerns, and other maintenance headaches. Even so, the 2016 BMW 5 Series remains appealing for buyers who want a refined sedan with strong performance, a long list of features, and the classic BMW balance of comfort and capability.

The bmw 550i is just plain excellent. I purchased mine about 5 hours away from home so I had a pretty proper test immediately. It’s very powerful and extremely comfortable which is exactly what I want from a luxury vehicle.

How much does the 2016 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,070 |
| Year-Round Low | $12,070 |
| Year-Round High | $13,323 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,324 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.41% |
Prices have softened 9.41% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 823 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and conditions.
Is the 2016 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2016 BMW 5 Series earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, luxurious comfort, and extensive range of features, and many also highlight the smooth driving experience and available M Sport suspension. In practical terms, that makes it a strong fit if you want a refined midsize luxury sedan that still emphasizes driving involvement and offers a broad mix of powertrains and amenities. With 32.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a competitive offer.
Is the 2016 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Reviewers describe the car as powerful, comfortable, and feature-rich, and many note a smooth driving experience that helps it feel dependable in daily use. The owner feedback also points to a model that can deliver a satisfying ownership experience when maintained well. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that upkeep and condition matter a lot, so a well-documented example is the safer path.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW 5 Series?
At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a shop that knows luxury sedans. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and signs of past bodywork or deferred service, since those details can matter more than mileage alone. Because this model can be complex, a careful inspection is especially valuable if you want to avoid expensive surprises later.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW 5 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 823 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.41% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,070, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $12,070 sits slightly below last year's $13,324.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and service history rather than just model-year appeal. Well-kept examples should hold up better than neglected ones, especially in a segment where buyers compare features and maintenance records closely.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.41% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $16,903, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $12,070 average.
- It brings a fully redesigned chassis with lighter materials and updated engines.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2016 is the stronger starting point because it combines a lower average price with solid owner satisfaction and decent deal availability. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer redesign and updated engineering, the 2017 is the better upgrade path. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2016 is the more practical choice; for shoppers prioritizing the newest platform, move up a year.
