Is the 2016 Audi A3 a good car?

Generally — you’re looking at a 4/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The 2016 A3 is positioned as an entry-level luxury car that adds features, functionality, and flair after a redesign, with a well-sorted chassis, classy interior, and invigorating drivetrain. It also leans into everyday usability with newly standard reversing camera, parking sensors, and heated washers and mirrors, while the S Line appearance package adds a more aggressive look without giving up practicality.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

The market shows 31.1% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there’s still room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Audi A3 reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The A3’s polished chassis and upscale cabin support the impression of a well-finished car, and the expert evaluation also points to strong everyday usability. Its drivetrain is described as engaging, and the model’s standard convenience and safety equipment help it feel more complete than a bare-bones entry luxury car.

The performance notes also emphasize a tight, responsive platform and a transmission that’s up to the task, which supports confidence in day-to-day use. If you buy used, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by hard use or neglected features.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Audi A3?

At 54.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision or shows signs of heavy use. Focus on condition details that matter in a compact luxury car: interior wear, electronics, and whether the equipment level matches the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Premium trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, leather, power seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10-speaker stereo, xenon headlights, LED running lights, auto wipers, and a panoramic sunroof on the sedan, while the Premium Plus adds 18-inch wheels, heated front seats, power for the front passenger seat, keyless entry and ignition, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Prestige brings the most technology and convenience, and the base trim misses lane-keep assist.
• Powertrain: You can choose among three engines, including a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine with 170 hp and 200 lb-ft, a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 50 more hp and 58 lb-ft, and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel with 150 hp and 236 lb-ft. The 1.8-liter is FWD only, while the 2.0-liter adds stronger acceleration and less turbo lag.
• Safety package: Audi Pre-Sense with collision-avoidance braking, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise are part of the higher-tech safety setup, along with standard stability and traction control, 4-wheel antilock discs, parking sensors, a reversing camera, and a full airbag suite. The base Premium trim does not get lane-keep assist.
• Infotainment: The standard MMI interface uses a retractable display, and the upgraded system adds a touch-sensitive rotary dial. The Tech package brings navigation, voice controls, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, configurable digital gauges, and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.8-liter sedan is rated at 27 mpg combined, with 23 mpg city and 33 highway. The 2.0-liter FWD setup gains 1 mpg in city driving, while the AWD convertible is rated at 26 mpg combined, with 23 mpg city and 32 highway. The turbodiesel is rated at 36 mpg combined, with 31 mpg city and 43 highway.

Which 2016 Audi A3 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Audi A3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, Prestige.

Here's the short version:

• Premium: This is the entry point, but it still feels well equipped with leather, dual-zone climate control, a 10-speaker stereo, xenon headlights, LED running lights, auto wipers, and the MMI interface. It’s the trim to consider if you want the lowest starting point and plan to add select features à la carte.
• Premium Plus: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds heated front seats, keyless entry and ignition, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 18-inch wheels. It also gets you closer to the more upscale feel without jumping all the way to the top trim.
• Prestige: This is the trim for you if you want the most technology and convenience, including adaptive cruise, Audi Pre-Sense with collision-avoidance braking, lane-keep assist, and the Tech package with navigation, Wi-Fi hotspot, configurable digital gauges, and the 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo.

The safety package is strongest on the higher trims, while the base Premium misses lane-keep assist.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Audi A3?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 563 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.88% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,801, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Audi A3's resale value?

The current average of $10,930 sits slightly below last year's $11,864.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point if you plan to keep the car for a while. For a future seller, it means you should expect some pressure on resale unless your car is especially clean, well equipped, and well documented.

The A3’s upscale interior and strong feature content should help it stay appealing to used buyers. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Audi A3 safe?

The 2016 Audi A3 earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. It also earns top scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, including strong results for seat and head restraints.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Audi Pre-Sense with collision-avoidance braking is part of the safety story, along with lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise on better-equipped versions. Standard safety equipment also includes stability and traction control, 4-wheel antilock discs, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, and a full airbag suite.

One caveat is that the automatic braking system can be intrusive in some situations, so you should test its behavior during your inspection and make sure it feels predictable to you.

Should I buy a 2016 Audi A3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.88% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• Audi added standard reversing camera, parking sensors, and heated washers and mirrors, plus an S Line appearance package for more aggressive style.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $9,928, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $10,930 average.
• It brought Audi style and AWD appeal into a smaller, more accessible package.

The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped and more polished version of the A3, the 2016 is the stronger pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 can still make sense, especially if you find a clean example with the features you want.
