Why it stands out
The 2016 Acura MDX stands out for putting safety, athleticism, and refinement at the center of its appeal. Those qualities make it easy to see why it is positioned as a luxury model, and they give it a broad mix of traits that should attract buyers looking for a premium family vehicle with a more engaging character than many rivals.
For 2016, Acura also gave the MDX a new 9-speed automatic transmission, which is one of the year’s key updates. At the same time, the model’s reception was complicated by the existence of a redesigned Honda Pilot, which made the MDX less appealing to the reviewer than before. Even so, the 2016 Acura MDX remains notable for combining comfort, safety, and performance in a single package, and owner feedback suggests that its ride quality, interior space, and advanced features are especially appreciated. Some owners have also reported transmission-shifting concerns, which is worth keeping in mind.

Yes a great value and w/ Acura watch this is totally incredible for a smaller suv. Having the Acura 4yr. Warranty w/50K miles. This has the 3.5 Fwd power everywhere and power outlets are all over as well. Leather is beautiful it’s got more buttons it can be overwhelming but it’s greatly appreciated.

I chose this specific trim (Elite model) for comfort and well… the wide screen entertainment system for my younger kids. For a 8 year old car it drives amazingly. I have driven Hondas, Toyotas Fords but this might be the best I have owned.

How much does the 2016 Acura MDX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,644 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,446 |
| Year-Round High | $15,618 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,620 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.25% |
Prices have softened 6.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 998 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Acura MDX earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, effective safety features, and overall performance. They also highlight the spacious interior and advanced features, which make it a strong fit if you want a premium family vehicle with room for passengers and gear.
That lines up with the model’s broader appeal: it is positioned as a luxury SUV with a more engaging character than many rivals, while still emphasizing comfort and refinement. With 32.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with praise for its comfortable ride, spacious cabin, and overall value. The expert review also describes the MDX as a model that exudes quality and gives the impression that it will last a good, long time.
The main caution is that some owners have reported transmission-shifting concerns, and the expert review also raises concerns about the new transmission and Idle Stop behavior. For used buyers, that means you should pay close attention to how the drivetrain behaves on a test drive and verify service history before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Acura MDX?
At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, with extra attention to the transmission, braking feel, and any signs of uneven wear or repair quality. Because this model is praised for comfort and refinement, you should also make sure the cabin, electronics, and driver-assistance features are working as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The MDX uses a package-based lineup rather than traditional trims, and the base setup is simpler than the better-equipped versions. The Technology and Advance packages add more of the features most buyers will want, while the Advance package brings ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, and parking assistance sensors.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower, paired with a new 9-speed automatic transmission for 2016. Front-wheel drive is standard, and SH-AWD is available if you want the torque-transfer benefits of Acura’s all-wheel-drive system.
- Safety package: AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and a road-departure mitigation system. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is tied to the Technology or Advance Package.
- Infotainment: The MDX uses a dual-screen setup, and all models gain Siri Eyes Free for 2016. The Technology Package adds navigation with real-time traffic reports, a premium sound system with HD Radio, and AcuraLink services, while the Advance Package adds a larger rear entertainment display.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert review says the SH-AWD model is rated at 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, while Advance-package models with Idle Stop can reach 19 mpg city and 22 mpg combined.
Which 2016 Acura MDX trim should I buy?
The 2016 Acura MDX is offered in 1 trim level: MDX.
Here's the short version:
The MDX is sold with packages rather than a wide trim ladder, so your decision is really about how much equipment you want. The Technology Package is the best-value path for most shoppers because it adds navigation, real-time traffic, a premium audio system, AcuraLink services, and important safety tech. If you want more comfort and convenience, the Advance Package adds ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, remote engine start, and parking sensors.
The safety-package note is simple: AcuraWatch Plus is available on any version of the MDX, but blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert requires the Technology or Advance Package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura MDX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you focus on the right listings.
- Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 998 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,446, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura MDX's resale value?
The current average of $14,644 sits slightly below last year's $15,620.
That price movement suggests the MDX has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. The model’s strong owner satisfaction and reputation for value should help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with clean history and desirable equipment.
For you, the key takeaway is that a lower entry price can reduce your downside if you plan to own the SUV for several years. Well-maintained listings with the right package mix should be easier to resell than neglected examples with questionable service records.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX safe?
The 2016 Acura MDX earns Top Safety Pick recognition from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA in every single assessment, along with a four-star rollover resistance rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
AcuraWatch Plus is the key driver-assistance suite, and it adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and a road-departure mitigation system. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is available with the Technology or Advance Package, which also include rain-sensing wipers.
That combination makes safety one of the MDX’s biggest strengths, and it is a major reason the model appeals to family buyers. If you are comparing used examples, prioritize listings with the safety package you want already installed.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The year brought a new 9-speed automatic transmission, plus AcuraWatch Plus availability and strong safety performance.
The bottom line: If you want a used MDX with strong safety credentials, solid owner satisfaction, and a lower average price than last year, the 2016 model is the one to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, focus on clean-history listings with the Technology Package or better, since those versions deliver the most useful mix of comfort, safety, and everyday convenience.
