Why it stands out
The 2016 Acura MDX stands out for putting safety, athleticism, and refinement at the center of its appeal. Those are the qualities highlighted as its primary selling points, and they give the MDX a broad luxury-SUV character that aims to balance comfort with a more engaging driving feel.
For 2016, the MDX also gained a new 9-speed automatic transmission, which is one of the key updates tied to this model year. That change helps define the 2016 version, though it may not be universally welcomed, since transmission shifting is also noted as a common concern among owners. Even so, the 2016 Acura MDX remains appealing for buyers who want a refined, family-friendly luxury SUV with a comfortable ride, strong safety features, and solid overall performance.

Yes a great value and w/ Acura watch this is totally incredible for a smaller suv. Having the Acura 4yr. Warranty w/50K miles. This has the 3.5 Fwd power everywhere and power outlets are all over as well. Leather is beautiful it’s got more buttons it can be overwhelming but it’s greatly appreciated.

I chose this specific trim (Elite model) for comfort and well… the wide screen entertainment system for my younger kids. For a 8 year old car it drives amazingly. I have driven Hondas, Toyotas Fords but this might be the best I have owned.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,414 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,414 |
| Year-Round High | $15,273 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,261 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.55% |
Prices have softened 5.55% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,064 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Acura MDX earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, effective safety features, and overall performance. They also highlight the spacious interior and advanced features, which make it especially appealing if you want a family-friendly luxury SUV.
That lines up with the MDX’s broader mission: it’s aimed at buyers who want a refined, comfortable three-row SUV with a more engaging driving feel than many rivals. With 34.6% of listings priced as good or great deals, there’s still meaningful market availability if you’re shopping carefully.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, trouble-free, and well suited to long-term use, with many drivers describing it as a great value for the money. The expert evaluation also describes the MDX as having a quality feel that suggests it will last a good, long time.
On the ownership side, Acura says the MDX’s costs are average, and the model’s reputation for reliability remains a meaningful part of its appeal. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that advanced technology and transmission behavior can affect satisfaction if the vehicle hasn’t been maintained well.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Acura MDX?
At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a complex option package. Pay close attention to how the transmission behaves on the test drive, since shifting concerns are a recurring ownership theme. It’s also smart to verify that the safety and convenience features work as expected, because this model leans heavily on technology.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The MDX is sold with the choice of SH-AWD or not, and then option packages determine how much equipment you get. Base versions are simpler, while higher packages add more comfort, convenience, and safety technology.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower, paired with a new 9-speed automatic transmission for 2016. SH-AWD is available, and the transmission is intended to improve fuel efficiency, though the driving experience is not universally praised.
- Safety package: AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and road-departure mitigation. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is tied to the Technology or Advance Package.
- Infotainment: The MDX uses a dual-screen setup, and all models gain Siri Eyes Free for 2016. The Technology Package adds navigation with real-time traffic, a premium sound system with HD Radio, and AcuraLink services.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates the SH-AWD model at 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With the Advance Package and Idle Stop, ratings rise to 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.
Which 2016 Acura MDX trim should I buy?
The 2016 Acura MDX is offered in 1 trim level: MDX.
Here's the short version:
The MDX is packaged around equipment groups rather than a wide trim ladder, so your best choice depends on how much technology and convenience you want. The Technology Package is the most natural value step if you want navigation, real-time traffic, premium audio, and more safety tech without going all the way to the top. The Advance Package is for you if you want the most comfort-focused setup, including ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, remote start, and parking sensors.
AcuraWatch Plus is available on any version, so you can add the core driver-assistance suite without moving up a package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura MDX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,064 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.55% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,414, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura MDX's resale value?
The current average of $14,414 sits slightly below last year's $15,261.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition so you’re not starting from a weakened price position.
The MDX still has support from its strong owner satisfaction and luxury-SUV appeal, which helps preserve demand. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should remain easier to move than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX safe?
The 2016 Acura MDX earns Top Safety Pick recognition from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA in every single assessment, accompanied by a four-star rollover resistance rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and road-departure mitigation. If you want blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, you need the Technology or Advance Package, and those packages also include rain-sensing wipers.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.55% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 model year is defined by the new 9-speed automatic transmission, which is one of its key updates.
The bottom line: If you want a well-equipped luxury SUV with strong safety credentials and broad owner approval, the 2016 MDX is a reasonable target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare it carefully with nearby years, but the 2016 remains attractive when you find a clean, well-priced example with the equipment you want.
