CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Acura MDX
overall

Summary
With 1,032 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,656, 32.2% of 2016 Acura MDXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Acura MDX 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
62.0% of 2016 MDX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Acura MDX stands out for putting safety, athleticism, and refinement at the center of its appeal. Those qualities make it easy to see why it is positioned as a luxury model, and they give it a broad mix of traits that should attract buyers looking for a premium family vehicle with a more engaging character than many rivals.
For 2016, Acura also gave the MDX a new 9-speed automatic transmission, which is one of the year’s key updates. At the same time, the model’s reception was complicated by the existence of a redesigned Honda Pilot, which made the MDX less appealing to the reviewer than before. Even so, the 2016 Acura MDX remains notable for combining comfort, safety, and performance in a single package, and owner feedback suggests that its ride quality, interior space, and advanced features are especially appreciated. Some owners have also reported transmission-shifting concerns, which is worth keeping in mind.

Yes a great value and w/ Acura watch this is totally incredible for a smaller suv. Having the Acura 4yr. Warranty w/50K miles. This has the 3.5 Fwd power everywhere and power outlets are all over as well. Leather is beautiful it’s got more buttons it can be overwhelming but it’s greatly appreciated.

I chose this specific trim (Elite model) for comfort and well… the wide screen entertainment system for my younger kids. For a 8 year old car it drives amazingly. I have driven Hondas, Toyotas Fords but this might be the best I have owned.

How much does the 2016 Acura MDX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,667 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,446 |
| Year-Round High | $15,624 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,626 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.14% |
Prices have softened 6.14% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,020 listings available, which suggests solid inventory availability for shoppers comparing options.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Acura MDX earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, effective safety features, spacious interior, and advanced features. That lines up well with the MDX’s role as a premium family vehicle, especially if you want a three-row SUV with a more refined and engaging character than many rivals.
With 33.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels reliable, dependable, and trouble-free over the long haul, with many drivers saying it is a great value for the money. The expert review also describes the MDX as having a quality feel that suggests it will last a good, long time.
The powertrain commentary is more mixed, though, because the new transmission and Idle Stop system drew criticism for their behavior. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is less about the core vehicle and more about making sure the transmission and related systems feel right in real-world driving.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Acura MDX?
At 61.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has any accident history. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior repair quality, and whether the transmission behaves smoothly in normal driving.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The MDX is offered with Super Handling All-Wheel Drive or not, and option packages change the equipment mix. The base setup is simpler, while higher packages add more comfort, convenience, and safety content.
- Powertrain: A 3.5-liter V6 produces 290 horsepower and is paired with a new 9-speed automatic transmission. SH-AWD is available, and the transmission is tuned for better fuel efficiency, though the review notes some drivability concerns.
- Safety package: AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and road-departure mitigation. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert requires the Technology or Advance Package.
- Infotainment: All models gain Siri Eyes Free compatibility. The Technology Package adds navigation with real-time traffic reports, a premium sound system with HD Radio, and a solar-sensing climate control system. The Entertainment Package adds a rear-seat entertainment system and a 110-volt power outlet, and the Advance Package increases the entertainment display to 16.2 inches.
- Fuel efficiency: The SH-AWD model is rated at 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With the Advance Package and Idle Stop, ratings rise to 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.
Which 2016 Acura MDX trim should I buy?
The 2016 Acura MDX is offered in 1 trim level: MDX.
Here's the short version:
The MDX is best approached as a package-driven SUV rather than a traditional trim ladder. The key decision is which option package you want, since that determines how much safety, comfort, and convenience equipment you get.
The base MDX gives you the core V6 powertrain, the upscale cabin, and the fundamental luxury-SUV experience. If you want the best value, look for a well-equipped example with the Technology Package, since it adds navigation, real-time traffic, premium audio, and important safety-related technologies.
If you want more comfort and convenience, the Advance Package adds Idle Stop, remote engine start, ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, and parking assistance sensors. The Entertainment Package is the right fit if you need rear-seat entertainment and the larger display.
AcuraWatch Plus is available on any version of the MDX, but blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert requires the Technology or Advance Package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura MDX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,020 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.14% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,446, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura MDX's resale value?
The current average of $14,667 sits slightly below last year's $15,626.
That decline suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it also means sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you own one, the softer pricing trend can reduce your upside in the short term, especially if your vehicle lacks desirable equipment or has condition issues.
Even so, the MDX still benefits from strong owner satisfaction and a reputation for value, which helps support demand. Well-kept examples with the right equipment should remain easier to move than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX safe?
The 2016 Acura MDX earns Top Safety Pick recognition from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA in every single assessment, along with a four-star rollover resistance rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and road-departure mitigation. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert requires the Technology or Advance Package, which also include rain-sensing wipers.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.14% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 update brought a new 9-speed automatic transmission, but the review notes that this change, along with the redesigned Honda Pilot’s arrival, made the MDX less appealing than before.
The bottom line: If you want a well-equipped luxury three-row SUV with strong safety credentials, solid owner satisfaction, and a softer used-car price, the 2016 MDX is still worth considering. If you are especially sensitive to transmission behavior or want the strongest value proposition, you may want to compare it carefully against nearby model years before deciding.
