CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota Tacoma

Summary
With 1,350 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,295.00, 30.8% of 2015 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a truck built for buyers who care more about capability than modern tech. In its final year of production before a complete redesign, it was available as a limited-production TRD Pro trim that enhanced its off-road ability in a Baja-flavored way. That focus gives it a clear identity: it is the kind of Tacoma meant for drivers whose destinations are far off the beaten path.
That same specialization is also what limits its appeal. The truck is described as a one-trick pony that may not serve well as a versatile family vehicle, and it definitely shows its age from a technological standpoint. Even so, that old-school character is part of the draw for shoppers who want a rugged, purpose-built pickup with undeniable off-road talent.

This truck has a lot of cool features although it's lacking power seats. I would compare it to the Nissan Frontier and Ford Ranger.

The Gen 2 Tacoma VVI 4.0 L cycl. motor is relatively maintenance free . Change the oil religiously every 5 to 7500 k mi. And you should expect 300,000 plus. Mi.s What the Tacoma lacks in technology and fine durable finishes it makes up in worry free workhorse performance and longevity. And perhaps moreover long-term resale value!

How much does the 2015 Toyota Tacoma cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,272 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,446.08 |
| Year-Round High | $20,956.08 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,805 |

There are 1,380 listings available, which suggests solid inventory availability. If you find a listing below $19,446.08, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Generally — 4.33/5 — this Tacoma earns a 6/10 expert rating, and the model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Cost effectiveness. Owners consistently praise its reliability, rugged look, and powerful engine, while also highlighting comfort and spaciousness. That lines up with its use-case focus: you’re looking at a truck built more for capability and work/play duty than for modern tech or family-hauling versatility. 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback points to reliability, and the expert review also describes the Tacoma as durable and dependable, with a reputation for holding up well over time. The cost-effectiveness notes reinforce that view by calling it a durable machine and highlighting strong value retention. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the truck’s basic toughness and more about finding one that hasn’t been worn hard or modified heavily.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota Tacoma?
At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used off-road or fitted with aftermarket hardware. Pay close attention to signs of body damage, suspension wear, and any evidence of hard use. Because this model year is already showing its age, condition matters more than mileage alone.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The TRD Pro stands out with off-road hardware, including an electronically locking rear differential, hill-start assist control, downhill assist control, bead-lock-style wheels, knobby all-terrain tires, and upgraded suspension. It also rides higher and lacks step rails, while the cabin still leans heavily on cheap, gray plastic.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 is the core engine here, and the TRD supercharger raises output to 295 horsepower and 318 lb-ft of torque. The added power is noticeable, but fuel economy suffers, and the truck is described as thirsty.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes six airbags and Smart Stop Technology. An optional reversing camera is mentioned, and downhill assistance control appears on the TRD Pro. The truck’s safety hardware is basic by modern standards.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, USB 2.0, and music streaming. The premium setup adds Entune App Suite, a reversing camera, navigation, a JBL sound system, voice recognition, satellite radio, predictive traffic and weather reports, and HD Radio.
- Fuel efficiency: The TRD Pro averaged 15.1 mpg in testing, and the broader 4.0-liter V6 is described as getting 18 mpg, which is not especially strong for the class.
Which 2015 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 1 trim level: TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
The TRD Pro is the clear choice if you want the most off-road capability and can live with its compromises. It adds the suspension, tires, locking rear differential, and other trail-focused hardware that define this model year, but it also brings a rougher daily-driving experience, higher cost, and weaker fuel economy. The safety package is basic, so you should be especially careful about condition and prior use.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota Tacoma?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,380 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.56% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,446.08, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $20,272 sits slightly below last year's $20,805.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means your upside will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the truck has been maintained. Because this model has a reputation for durability and strong value retention, clean examples should still attract steady interest.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The Tacoma gets a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, and in IIHS testing it earns Good ratings, though it has not been tested for small overlap frontal protection. It also receives a Marginal roof crush strength rating.
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety equipment is limited by modern standards: six airbags and Smart Stop Technology are standard, while a reversing camera is optional and downhill assistance control appears on the TRD Pro. That means you should not expect a broad driver-assistance suite, and the truck’s age shows in its safety profile.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.56% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It’s the final-year TRD Pro version with serious off-road hardware and a clear purpose-built identity.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,278, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,272 average.
- It brings a redesigned, more configurable Tacoma with broader cab and drivetrain choices.
The bottom line: If you want the lower price and the distinctive final-year TRD Pro character, the 2015 makes sense. If you want a newer redesign with broader everyday flexibility and can spend more, the 2016 is the better long-term alternative. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2015 is the smarter value play as long as you verify condition carefully.
