CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 1,022 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,924.00, 29.9% of 2015 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota 4Runner 4.43 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
62.0% of 2015 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged SUV aimed squarely at drivers who value off-road ability and utility over everyday polish. In expert testing, it was described as built for hard-core off-road enthusiasts and as excelling on rock-strewn paths. It was also praised for carrying lots of stuff, which adds to its appeal for buyers who need a vehicle that can handle gear as well as rough terrain.
That capability comes with tradeoffs, though. The same test-drive summary noted that it makes too many compromises to serve well as a day-to-day runabout for ferrying little kids, and the broader impression is that its strengths are tied closely to its adventurous mission. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal by pointing to a smooth ride, comfortable seating, strong reliability, and the rear window that opens like a regular window, while also noting that it is not the most fuel-efficient choice in its class.

Horrible shaking steering wheel, leather wants to tear, no space, terrible gas mileage.

I absolutely love the feel of the vehicle, the seats are very comfortable in front and back. The front seat feels snug which makes me feel safer while driving and the technology is top notch. The backup camera is very useful and overall the vehicle is a very smooth drive offering great off road capabilities

I’m so happy with my 4Runner it’s the perfect size, a comfortable ride, easy to park and I feel is quite comparable to my Tahoe I had before it. It’s better on gas and I like the more reliable name.

There are 1,014 listings available, which suggests you should have some room to compare prices and condition. If you find a listing below $21,393.42, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Generally — the 2015 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.43/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, comfortable seating, and strong reliability, and they also value its off-road capability. The overview points to a rugged, body-on-frame SUV with real utility, which fits buyers who want space and capability more than a soft-riding crossover. The market also shows 31.1% good or great deals, which gives you some flexibility if you shop carefully.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights strong reliability, and the expert review reinforces that impression by describing the 4Runner as tried-and-true and durable. The cost-effectiveness notes also point to free maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles, which helps early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic dependability and more about living with the 4Runner’s compromises in fuel use and everyday refinement.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
At 59% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you get too far into the process, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the truck has seen off-road use or shows signs of hard driving. Focus on body condition, suspension wear, tire condition, and any evidence of underbody damage, since this model is often bought for rugged use. If you’re comparing multiple listings, put the cleanest history and best-maintained example at the top of your list.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SR5 is rear-wheel drive, while the Trail adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable driving modes, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control. The Limited adds leather seats, ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, front and rear parking sensors, and Safety Connect.
- Powertrain: The 4Runner uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. It feels adequate, but it is not especially quick, and fuel economy is weak at around 18 mpg combined.
- Safety package: The 4Runner includes a standard reversing camera, Hill Start Assist Control, and 4WD models add Active Traction Control and Downhill Assist Control. Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited, and the model lacks some of the latest active safety technologies.
- Infotainment: Standard setup includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen, navigation, upgraded stereo speakers, Entune App Suite smartphone connectivity, and a USB 2.0 port. The larger 7-inch screen is exclusive to the Limited, and wireless smartphone integration is not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the 4Runner averages 18 mpg in combined driving, and real-world testing returned 16.8 mpg.
Which 2015 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 4 trim levels: SR5, Trail, TRD Pro and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 is the least expensive path in, but it starts with rear-wheel drive, which undercuts the 4Runner’s core appeal if you want real trail capability.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Trail is the best fit if you want the 4Runner’s off-road hardware without jumping to the most specialized version. Standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control make it the most balanced choice.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the best pick if you want the most comfort and convenience, with ventilated leather seats, dual-zone climate control, a JBL audio system, parking sensors, and Safety Connect.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Pro is the most specialized choice, with Bilstein shocks, TRD springs, skid protection, and off-road tires, but it is the least practical option for typical daily driving.
Safety Connect is available only on the Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,014 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,393.42, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $21,807 sits slightly below last year's $22,775.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, softer pricing today can mean less immediate upside, but it also reflects a model that still holds meaningful demand. The 4Runner’s rugged reputation and owner satisfaction help support long-term interest, especially for buyers who want a durable SUV with real capability.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
The 4Runner’s safety content points to limited active-safety coverage, with only a standard reversing camera and no blind-spot monitoring mentioned. Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited, so lower trims miss that added peace-of-mind feature. The review also flags the SUV’s high center of gravity and rollover concern, which is a meaningful caveat for used buyers who plan to drive it in mixed conditions.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2015 adds the TRD Pro, giving you a factory-built off-road-focused option.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $20,800, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $21,807 average.
- It offers traditional body-on-frame durability with broad trim choice.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,302, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $21,807 average.
- It keeps the rugged formula while emphasizing off-road capability and strong resale value.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, availability, and enthusiast appeal, the 2015 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is saving money, the 2014 is the better value path; if you want to spend more for a newer example, the 2016 is the natural upgrade.
