CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 101 currently listed for sale near Charlotte, NC and an average price of $19,498.00, 24.8% of 2015 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota 4Runner 4.43 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
67.3% of 2015 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged SUV aimed squarely at drivers who value off-road ability and utility over everyday polish. In expert testing, it was described as built for hard-core off-road enthusiasts and as excelling on rock-strewn paths. It was also praised for carrying lots of stuff, which adds to its appeal for buyers who need a vehicle that can handle gear as well as rough terrain.
That capability comes with tradeoffs, though. The same test-drive summary noted that it makes too many compromises to serve well as a day-to-day runabout for ferrying little kids, and the broader impression is that its strengths are tied closely to its adventurous mission. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal by pointing to a smooth ride, comfortable seating, strong reliability, and the rear window that opens like a regular window, while also noting that it is not the most fuel-efficient choice in its class.

I absolutely love the feel of the vehicle, the seats are very comfortable in front and back. The front seat feels snug which makes me feel safer while driving and the technology is top notch. The backup camera is very useful and overall the vehicle is a very smooth drive offering great off road capabilities

I’m so happy with my 4Runner it’s the perfect size, a comfortable ride, easy to park and I feel is quite comparable to my Tahoe I had before it. It’s better on gas and I like the more reliable name.

If you find a listing below $21,393.62, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Generally — 4.43/5 from owners and 7.33/10 from experts points to a model that fits a very specific job well. The 4Runner is aimed at drivers who want rugged utility and real off-road ability, and the expert summary says it excels on rock-strewn paths while carrying lots of gear.
Owners repeatedly praise its smooth ride, comfortable seating, and strong reliability. They also like the off-road capability and the rear window that opens like a regular window.
That makes it a strong fit if you value capability and utility more than everyday polish. 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback highlights strong reliability, and the broader ownership picture points to a vehicle you can count on over time. The expert cost-effectiveness notes also point to impressive reliability ratings and free maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles.
That said, used buyers should still watch for wear tied to hard use, since this SUV’s mission often invites more demanding driving than a typical family vehicle.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
At 57.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you get serious about any listing. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen off-road use or heavy towing. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of abuse rather than mileage alone.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SR5 comes with rear-wheel drive, while the Trail adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable driving modes, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control. The Limited adds leather seats, ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, front and rear parking sensors, and Safety Connect.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, and the 5-speed automatic can be slow to downshift when you want more passing power. Fuel economy is expectedly dismal, and the expert drive returned 16.8 mpg in mixed use versus an EPA expectation of 18 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Every 4Runner gets a reversing camera, and models with 4WD include Active Traction Control and Downhill Assist Control. Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited, and the model lacks blind-spot monitoring.
- Infotainment: Standard setup includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen, navigation, upgraded stereo speakers, Entune App Suite smartphone connectivity, predictive traffic and weather, and a USB 2.0 port. The larger 7-inch screen is exclusive to the Limited.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says 18 mpg combined, and the expert test drive returned 16.8 mpg.
Which 2015 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 4 trim levels: SR5, Trail, TRD Pro and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 is the least compelling if you want the 4Runner’s core appeal, because it starts with rear-wheel drive and only gains part-time 4WD with Downhill Assist Control if you move up from the most basic setup.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Trail is the best value if you want the 4Runner’s off-road hardware, because it adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable terrain modes, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most polished choice, with ventilated leather seats, dual-zone climate control, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, parking sensors, and Safety Connect.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Pro is the most specialized choice, with Bilstein shocks, TRD front springs, a TRD skid plate, and off-road tires, but it is the least everyday-friendly option.
Safety Connect is available only on the Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough pricing softness to create opportunities.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,033 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.91% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,393.62, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $21,882 sits slightly below last year's $22,539.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale gains may be more gradual than they were a year ago. If you buy well and keep the truck in strong condition, you should still have a solid path to value retention. The 4Runner’s reputation for durability and utility helps support demand in the used market.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
Aside from a standard reversing camera, the 4Runner offers few of the latest active safety features. Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited, and the model lacks blind-spot monitoring. The expert safety commentary also flags rollover concerns tied to the SUV’s high center of gravity.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.91% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2015 stands out for its hard-core off-road focus and strong cargo-hauling ability.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $20,843, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $21,882 average.
- It blends ruggedness with everyday usability.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,255, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $21,882 average.
- It adds useful updates like cell-phone navigation and more towing capacity.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest off-road personality and can live with its compromises, the 2015 is the right target. If price matters most, the 2014 is the better value play. If you want a slightly newer version with useful upgrades and can stretch your budget, the 2016 is worth a look.
