CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Toyota 4Runner

Summary
With 189 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,283, 31.2% of 2018 Toyota 4Runner listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Toyota 4Runner 4.54 / 5 stars.
76.2% of 2018 Toyota 4Runner listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Toyota 4Runner stands out because it stays true to the old-school SUV formula at a time when many midsize SUVs had moved toward car-based designs. It keeps body-on-frame construction, and it was still aimed at buyers who wanted off-road capability first. That rugged character is a big part of its appeal, especially for shoppers who value durability and a vehicle that can handle rough terrain.
For 2018, the 4Runner also offered a practical mix of equipment and capability. The available Trail trim included an electronic locking rear differential, Crawl Control, and a Multi-Terrain Select system, while all 4WD models got Downhill Assist Control and Toyota’s A-TRAC active traction control. Standard features across the generation included power windows and door locks, a multi-information display, and 10 cup holders, and available equipment could include Bluetooth, a JBL audio system, leather seats, and heated front seats. That said, the 4Runner’s strengths come with tradeoffs: it was known for poor on-road handling and fuel economy, and 4WD was not standard.

Always an excellent vehicle. Hands down unbeatable in the snow and one of the, by far, best 4x4 systems on the planet. Highly recommend trying one out. The wheels will fall off before the engine or transmission quits... just sayin..

This is a very nice vehicle, the one thing I wish this car did have, was a keyless start, but that’s not a deal breaker

Is the 2018 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 4.54/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its off-road capability and reliability, and many also like its style and durability. The 4Runner’s body-on-frame setup and off-road-first character make it a fit if you want a rugged SUV rather than a car-based crossover. With 35.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful number of opportunities to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.54/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights reliability, durability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, which is exactly what many used-SUV shoppers want from a long-term vehicle. The recurring praise for rugged construction and lasting value reinforces that reputation. For used buyers, that usually means lower anxiety about ownership, though condition still matters because age and prior use can affect how well a truck-based SUV holds up.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Toyota 4Runner?
At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, especially if the price looks unusually attractive. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. Because this model is often bought for rugged use, pay close attention to wear that could reflect off-road driving or heavy-duty ownership.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Toyota 4Runner?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on standout listings.
- Deal availability: 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,757 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.91% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $28,205, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $29,008 sits slightly below last year's $29,877.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point, but it also suggests resale values may not be climbing right now. If you plan to sell later, the current market gives you a decent baseline, especially if you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition. Demand should remain supported by the model’s reputation for durability and off-road capability.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.54/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.91% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.54/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $31,780, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $29,008 average.
- It adds a more modern-feeling take on the same rugged, off-road-first formula.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2018 is the stronger starting point because it combines a lower average price with solid owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year, the 2019 is the better secondary path for buyers who want to compare pricing against a slightly updated alternative.
