CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Subaru Forester
overall

Summary
With 2,331 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,253.00, 30.9% of 2015 Subaru Foresters for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Subaru Forester 4.67 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
63.8% of 2015 Forester models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Forester stands out as a crossover that puts value and safety ahead of flash. It earned a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the expert test drive data also notes that it was named SUV of the Year by Motor Trend. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a practical, well-regarded compact SUV without chasing the newest technology or the most luxurious cabin.
It is also described as fresh off a 2014 redesign, which helps explain why it still felt current enough to impress reviewers. The test-drive summary says that after a week in a 2.5i Premium trim, the reviewer understood the enthusiasm around it a little better. Owner feedback reinforces the Forester’s appeal by pointing to its smooth handling, spacious interior, fuel efficiency, and overall practicality. At the same time, some owners have raised concerns about reliability and the infotainment system, which fits the broader impression of a vehicle that prioritizes usefulness over polish.

Reviewed a 2015 Subaru 2.5i Limited on Jun 11, 2014
After 10 years with my old car, I have been checking out what's on the market. I hadn't considered a Subaru until someone suggested how much their friend liked their new Forester. So, not expecting much, I test drove one, three times so far. I was very favorably impressed. For a SUV, handling was quite nimble but was still comfortable over rough roads, railroad tracks and the like, while remaining solid and quiet. The base 2.5i engine was more than adequate for my needs. The interior is very spacious and the visibility great. The front seats could be a little better, but that can be said about most of the small SUVs on the market, and the overall design and infotainment systems are a bit out of date, but I can forgive that since I value the driving aspects of the car more. Overall, it is a great value for the money, even at the higher trim levels. It's my choice when I trade cars later this summer.

This vehicle is a great fit for me and my lifestyle. Plenty of room, runs really well, the moon roof is fantastic.

I loved my 2015 Subaru Forester ! It was comfortable and we went everywhere in it. No mountain too tall. Unfortunately it was totaled. We were not hurt due to its safety features. I’m looking for another and possibly a 2016.

I drove several models, but the Subaru Forester had plenty of pep, and was a very smooth operating vehicle. I compared it to the VW Tiguan and the Nissan Rogue. Feature for feature the Forester is the best value for my dollar.

How much does the 2015 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,281 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,881.83 |
| Year-Round High | $11,629.14 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,630 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.99% |
Prices have softened 2.99% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,358 listings available, which suggests you have room to compare options across the market.
If you find a listing below $10,881.83, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 2015 Subaru Forester earns a 4.67/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its smooth handling, spacious interior, fuel efficiency, and practicality. The overview also frames it as a value-focused compact crossover that puts safety ahead of flash, which fits the way it serves shoppers who want a useful daily driver rather than a luxury-first SUV.
With 26.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to find a strong-value example.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, practical ownership experience, with many drivers describing it as a vehicle they trust for everyday use. The expert drive notes also describe it as a good balance for a reliable family and grocery hauler, which reinforces the sense that it is built for steady long-term service.
The main ownership risk for used buyers is that some listings may carry the reliability concerns and infotainment complaints mentioned by owners, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Forester?
At 64% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin electronics and safety systems work as expected. Because this model is valued for practicality and safety, you want to make sure the example you choose still delivers both.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 2.5i Premium stands out as the tested trim, and the available All-Weather and EyeSight packages add meaningful equipment that helps separate better-equipped examples from simpler ones.
- Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder can be paired with a 6-speed manual or a CVT, while the turbocharged 2.0XT adds much more power; the CVT is the more efficient choice.
- Safety package: EyeSight adds pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure and sway warnings, and pre-collision throttle management, but it can disengage in low-visibility conditions.
- Infotainment: The standard screen is 4.3 inches, and the optional navigation system uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen; the tech setup is a weak point, so test it carefully.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT returns 24 mpg city and 32 highway, while the 6-speed manages 22/29; the turbocharged 2.0XT is rated at 23/28.
Which 2015 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2015 Subaru Forester is offered in 3 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.0XT.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the simplest path into the Forester, and it makes sense if you want the core Subaru formula without paying for extras. It gives you the basic practicality and efficiency that define the model, but it is the least equipped choice.
- 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the equipment that makes the Forester feel more complete, including the tested setup with the available All-Weather and EyeSight packages. If you want the strongest balance of value, safety, and everyday usefulness, this is the one to target.
- 2.0XT: Choose this if you want the strongest performance in the lineup. The turbocharged engine delivers much more power and quicker acceleration, but it is the pricier route and makes the most sense if you care more about punch than budget.
The EyeSight package is the safety upgrade to look for if you want the most advanced driver-assistance setup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Subaru Forester?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 26.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,358 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.99% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,881.83, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $11,281 sits slightly below last year's $11,630.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become a bit easier to buy, which can also mean future sellers may need to stay competitive on price. The current market still shows healthy demand, but buyers are clearly paying attention to value and condition.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety equipment includes symmetrical AWD, antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a strong airbag lineup with front pelvis/torso, side-curtain, and driver’s knee airbags. The EyeSight suite adds pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure and sway warnings, plus pre-collision throttle management.
The main caveat is that EyeSight relies on cameras, so low-visibility conditions can cause it to disengage.
Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 26.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.99% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines a fresh redesign with strong safety and practical everyday usefulness.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $9,938, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $11,281 average.
- It emphasizes all-weather confidence and practical versatility.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,957, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $11,281 average.
- It adds a new touchscreen interface and a more rounded overall package.
The bottom line: The 2015 is the sweet spot if you want a well-regarded Forester with strong safety, solid owner satisfaction, and a softer used-car price than newer examples. If your priority is saving money, the 2014 is the better value play; if you want a newer-feeling cabin and can spend more, the 2016 is worth a look.
